To-night the citizens were horrified to hearit whispered abovtthat Mrs. Dr. McRae, who died suddenly yesterday, had met her death by being poisoned. it appears t!

by Mrs McRae on Tuesday and addressed Rev. Donald McRae, city. She opened th box and ate some of the contents. An e.- amination of the candy afterwards hes proved beyond all doubt that the cor fectionary had strychnine in it and) s post mortés examination showed that this was the cadse of her death.

This evening it was discovered that simi- lar packages were received by Rev. J. De Soyres, rector of 5t. Johns Episcopai Church, and Rev. J. T. Deinstadt, pastox of the Exmouth Street Metho list Church. but hot 4 escaped the conseq Ut ces of eating in a strange manner.

Mr. Dunstadt opened his box and was about giving some to his children wher his wife hada presentiment that something was wrong with it, and would not allow the children to touch it. Mr. DeSoyres, in opening his, put a piece of the candy in hi mouth. He immediately discovered th: it had a very bitter taste and spat it cut, thinking that sume one was en leavoring to play a joke on him. He prompte however to show the candy to Dr. Hardiny, and that gentieman at once said there was strychnine on it.

It was late to-night when these leaked out sutliciently to be relied on, bu the news soon spread through the city and has created great excitement. Coroner Berryman to-mght empannelled a jury, and after viewing the body, the enquiry was ac- journed until Monday.

The Wreck of the Lily.

Hawirax, Uct. 4.

The court of inquiry into the recent dis- aster to H. M. 8. Lily, by which the ship became a total Joss and seven of her crew were drowned, at Point Armour, coast of Labrador, concluded its sitting at five o'clock last evening. From the evidence adduced, the court found that the captain (Kussel!) and the Ist lieutenant (Hewitt) were to blame, and they were reprimanded and dismissed from their ship. The mean- ing of this is that had the ship struck where she did and had not become a total wreck, the judgment of the court would have been the same.

Baseball in St. John.

Sr. Jonny, Oct. 3. The weather was very fine, but slightly cool for ball playiag to-day, nevertheless

the St. John’s and Shamrocks played the finest game played here this year. The St. John’s won, 5 tv 2, and therefore are

champions, having won three out of the

four games.

Militiamen in Canada. Orrawa, Oct. 3. The First Regiment of the Connecticut National Guards, arrived in Montreal to- day. The regiment is accompanied by th governor of Connecticut, the mayor Oi Hartfort and other prominent men.

Echoes of the Exhibitions.

THE carriage of so many persons by train without an accident, or even a hitch, is creditable in the highest degree to the management of the P. E. Island Railway. The conductors deserve special praise. WiAmong the visitors were E. Hackett, Esq, Inspector of Fisheries, Tignish, Ewen Stewart. i’rincipal of the High School, Georgetown, Neil McLeod, Princi- pal of the Davies School, Summerside, John Arbuckle, Inspector of Western Schools, J. C. Underhay. M. P. P. Ray Fortune, aud Michael McCormack, Esq , Souris East.

We have to thank Mr. McNeill and his efficient assistants for their help in the pre- paration of the prize liswof the Provincial Exhibition. A few mistakes have been brought to our notice, which we now cor- rect, as follows :—

The first prize for crayon drawing was won by Miss Mary McCabe, of New Zealand, not by Dr. Muttart. The doctor merely forwarded the picture.
