Ra-opening Old Uigg Church

The special re-opening servic- es at the Uigg Baptist church Sunday September 8th calls to mind that thy congregation is almost 1:!) years old. it was in 1929 that the Centennial service was held.

On that Sunday 28 years ago the church was crowded with worshippers honoring the mem- ory of their pioneer ancestors. History records that the Scotch Baptists in that area had made considerable progress under the wise leadership of John Fraser and John MacDonald. But valu- able additions came from Scot- land in l829. "Among them was one Samuel MacLeod. an indus- trious and genial and devout man."

He resided for some time at Belfast, it is recorded. and gave his attention to teaching school and preaching the gospel. Later he moved to Uigg where he sup- ported his family by farming. but continued to preach to con- gregations sometimes assembl- ed at private homes. and some- WMI OPGII air services until I55: w n a suitabla meeting house as erected.

One of the outstanding men who went out from this congre- gation was the Rev. J.A. Gordon D.D., of Montreal who returned to preach at the ' ' gar. vice in 1929. At that time he was assisted by Rev. J.C. Martin, Rev. M.A. Macliachern and Rev. A.C. MacLeod. Solista on that occasion were Mrs H.S. Hender- aon, Mrs. W. Garrat. Mrs George R. Macbeod and' Mrs. Vanldsrstine.

The present church. built in that replaced the little wooden church erected in 1852 on the ground set aside earlier as a community burying ground.

The Rsv. Samuel Mscbeod. it is said, ministered to the spiritu- al neads of the community with- out ever receiving any set sal- ary or expecting any. His grand- son is S.l2. Maclsood of Uigg who is following in his grandfather's footsteps as one of the main stays of the church.
