On the Miramichi River. New Brunswick, on the oth mstant, Allan MeDonald, in the 28th year of hisage. This excellent youns man met a sudden death while in the act of removing a large quantity of timber frou the landing imw the stream. Mr. Alderman Dakin seconded the motion. — It could not but be a subject of congratulation that although they had agencies )o every part of the world, they bad escaped Joss frum the con- flagration at Valparaiso. He observed in their list of directors and officers that below the name ot F. W. Russell, which gave 80 much weight ot public coutideuce tu the company, was that of W. P. Chrehugh, the manager, and he was sure he spoke the unanimous feeling of the board when he said they were greatly indebted to that gen- tleman’s untiring exertions fur their suecess.— (Hear, bear.) The tact that the premium income, which in 1262 was £24,977, amounted in 1863 to £65,049, not only evidenced the soundress of the institution, but likewise its management. (Hear, hear.)

The report was then adopted unanimously.

M. Bown (Liverpool) said that, with a view to the extension of the business in Liverpool, it bad been thought desirable to add to the wumber of the Liverpool beard, and fuur geutlemen had been selected whose influence was very exteusive, and who had, since overtures: were first made to them, brought considerable business of their own, and whose interest would tend considerably to the advantage of the company. He moved that Messrs. E. H. Harrison, E. Musgrove, J. G. Rob- insou, and C. Wigg be added to the Liverpool board of direetion.

The motion was seconded by Alderman Hale, and carried unanimously.

The directors retiring by rotation, viz., Messrs. Alderman Hale, J. H. Maekenzie, J. E. Naylor, G. M. Bown, and G. Kendall, were unanimcusly re-cleeted, as were also the auditors, Messrs. Al len and Banner; and a vote of thanks to the di- rectors in Leadon and Liverpeyl concluded the busil.ess.

LONDON AND LANCASHIRE FIRE AND LIFE INSURANCE COMVANY.

The second ordinary general meeting of pro prietors was held yesterday, at the Baltic, Thread- peedie-street ; Mr. F. W. Russell, M. P., in the chair. FIRE DEPARTMENT.

Mr. Clirebugh, the manager, having read the notice convening the meeting, the report, of which the following is a copy, was taken aa read:

“ The directors, in presenting their secoud an- nual report te the shareholders, have pleasure in bieng able to submit a statement of business ex- hibiting a large increase over the previous year : in tact, the income which has been reached has seldem—if ever—been obtained in the second year of any company. The premiums tor the year 1863 amount to £65,049 I1s. Sd., those re- ported last meeting were £22,246 19s, 3d; show- ing an increase of £39,502 I2s. 2d, or 160 pei cent. The amount paid aud provided for looses is £22,410 19s. 10d., being about 34 per cent. on the gross premiums, or 36 per cent. on the vet amount. The accounts of the company will be open tor the inspeetion of shareholders at the Londoo and Liverpool offices three clear days be- wre the meeting. After payment of all cutge nes, inetuding losses, reassuranees, general ex-

ises of management, eXpenses Consequent on the formation of branches and agencies at houe aud abroad, aud commissions, and also the pay- ment of two half-years’ interest to proprietors ai the rate of 5 per cent. per annum—the directors ire enabled to add to the reserve fund the snm of £i2,000. The various establishments of the company at home and abread have exhibited great zeal and diligence during the year, as the inerease in business abundantly testifies, and the hest thanks of the shareholders are due to the va- rious branches, district superintendents, aud nu- merous agents. In these districts where th Lendon and Lancashire is net yet represented the selection of influential agents occupies the careful attention of the board. The directors have very recently secured the services of a com- mittee for Edinburgh; and, from the position and standing of the embers, they louk fur au increase of business from that quarter.”

The Chairman obeerved that it was always pleasant for directors te meet shareholders under circumstances such as these im) which they as- sembled on the present occasion, when they had no apologies to make, but to congratulate them ou the prosperty they had attained. It was in some degree owmg to the cortidence placed in the di- rectors, aud iu sume degree to personal exertions, that they had beew able to extend the business of the office as they had done.
