Table 1. Useful Tree and Shrub Identification Guides.

1. Campbell, Hyland, & Campbell. 1978. Winter Keys to Woody Plants of Maine. Univ. of Maine. This book has a good technical key and excellent illustrations.

2. Gaudet, J.F. 1973. Native Trees of Prince Edward Island and the More Common Woodland Shrubs. This free publication of the Department of Agriculture and Forestry has line drawings of the leaves, twigs and reproductive structures as well as notes on use and location. Identification is made by comparison as there is no key.

3. Hosie, R.C. 1969. Native Trees of Canada. Queens Printer. This book featUres range maps, pictures of leaves, twigs, bark, reproductive structures, and seeds, plus illustrations of tree profiles. It has both winter and summer keys. Some confusion may be caused for the novice by the inclusion of similar trees from across Canada.

4. Petrides, George. 1958. Peterson Field Guide to Trees and Shrubs. This is probably the most useful guide on the list for the novice as the specific distinguishing features are shown by illustrations or pictures.

5. Phillips, Roger. 1978. Trees of North America and Europe. Pan Books. A goou book for general information on the trees of two continents. Keying is done using pictures of various tree features and a brief description of each tree is given.

6. Redher, Alfred. 1977. Manual of Cultivated Trees and Shrubs. Macmillan. A book for those well versed in technical nomenclature. It has descriptions of many cultivars.

7. Roland, A.E. & E.C. Smith. 1969. Flora of Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia Museum. Another book for those versed in the use of technical keys.

8. Sargent, Charles S. 1961. Manual of the Trees of North America. Dover Publ. The nomenclature is out of date but it is an excellent technical key.

9. Symonds, George w.D. 1958. The Tree Identification Book. & The Shrub Iden- tification Book. 1963. These two books are well illustrated with pictures and they form the basis of the identification system.

10. Donly, James F. 1960. Identification of Nova Scotia Moody Plants in Winter. Dept. of Lands and Forests, N.S. Has good technical keys and illustrations.

11. Roland, A.E. & D.A. Benson. 1955. Summer Key to Woody Plants of Nova Scotia. Dept. of Lands and Forests, N. S. Has good illustrations and technical keys.

12. Soper, James H. & Margaret L. Heimburger. 1982. The Shrubs of Ontario. Royal Onatrio Museum. This book has excellent illustrations, includes technical keys, and provides good coverage of willows.

13. White, J.H. (revised by R.C. Hosie). 1973. Forest Trees of Ontario and the More Commonly Planted Cultivated Trees. Ministry of Natural Resources, Ont. This book provides technical keys and photographs.
