James King, wholives in Essory’s Lane, was sentenced to twenty days imprisooment for stealing @ quantity of coal from Clarkin Broe. at one o'clock on Sunday morning. The v.lue of tne coal stolen amounted to 20cemts King admitted the theft and said he wanted the cosl to makca fire for himeelf. Albert P. Allin and Patrick Devsis, eaarged with drunkenness, were each fined $5 or 16 days. The hearing of the case against Patrick Gormley, charg-d with the same offence, was adjourejed for one week.

Teacuars’ Insti-ure.— The meeting on Saturday evening wae well attended aed proved most interesting and helpful. The first hour was taken up with a discussion 0a heme study, with especial reference to reading, after which Supervieor Stewart read a portion of Laudon on education, dealing principally with the power of re- tention. After a brief disa: ssion it wasde @ided to Continue the reading of this book at the next meeting, to be held on Saturday the 25th mst. In order te ascertain th opinion of the teachers present as to the meccessity of requiring home preperation of lessous, it was moved by Principal L Miller and seconded by Mise E. E. Sr Dunstan’s Carugprat.—The fourth of the series of special sermons was last evening delivered by Rev. Dr, Morrison, bis subject being “The Interpretation of the Sacred Scriptures. After showing how it was possible to misconsirue the ecrip- tures aud pOimting out the importance of having some assis. in interpreting them, Dr. Morrison c'aimed that the Charch—the pillar and ground of truth—was the custodian of God’s legislation and its D.vinelyappointed iater- preter. If every one was allowed to interpret the constitution and the laws of a country accarding to his own ideas whet a deplorable condition of affairs would arise. Hence the constitution of jadges and courts to prop= e.ly interpre: the laws. If judges and courts are necessary to explain the Jaws of the land how ruch more importan. is it that there should be some recognized authority to interpret the script- ures, which are so often misconstrued, | The Charch is not above the scripiures aay more than the judge is above the law; its mission is to explatn their true seuse and set aside doubis which may arise. The exposition of Catholic docirine upon this point was very cl-ar, and the discourse wae followed with ihe close t atteation by the large cong: egation.
