They had all committed treason, and were liable to be tried and punished. The only dif- ference was his—ltiel and Lepine were liable to be tried for murder. . Lepine was tried for murder, and found guilty; Niel was not tried because he was an outlaw, but outiawry under the common law of England is equa! toa conviction and these men were declared guilty of the homicide of Scott, and that is equal to murder, There is no evidence to show that O' Dono- hue had been guilty of the s'ightest offence in that connecti n, that he had anything to do with the death of Scott, and yet because he was a rebel—

Sir John Macdonald—Mr. McNamee says because he was an Irishman, he was by the solemn action of the present Government exiled for life, exiled forever. Alihough he was born in Canada, although a son of the soi]. although be had property in the North-West, although his mother, his bro. thews and friends, live in that country, he is obliged to stay across the line, while Le- pine, who was found guilty of murder, had only two years’ imprisonment, and iel was banished for six years to New York or Boston, where he could go to the theatre every evening if he liked. O’Donohue who was never found guilty of any crime, against whom no information had been laid on oath that he had shed the blood of Scott, was not included in theamnesty. | did not understand that kind of justice and I voted he should receive the same treat- ment as Riel and Lepine. Now that Lepine has served his term, I am in favor of O’ Dono hue getting a free pardon. [Cheers.] And, gentlemen, if he does not get a free pardon, it will not be my fault, because I will strong~ ly support by able friend, Mr. Costigan - as true an Irishman as ever lived—when he moves for a free pardon next session. (Cheers. ]

Sir John concluded by again expressing his thanks for the magnificent reception with which he had met, and retired amidst

enthusiastic cheering. Messrs. Mason, White, Thibault, Caron, Gibbs, Plumb, Stevenson, and Mitchell, in response to

calls, briefly addressed the people, after which they quietly dispersed to their homes,

The manner in which the Insurance Com. panies generally have met their losses by the St. John fire, is noble. Without a moment’s hesitation, the telegraph was made use of to notify the suffering public that the unparalleled losses would be met without delay; and in the hour of their deep distress this was doubtless a very great comfort. Where a!l did so well it is al- most invidious to particularise; but the English companies certainly deserve hearty commendation. The cabie was called into requisition; and ere on this side of the At- lantic we had scarcely more than heard the rough details of the tire, the cheering words came flashing along the bed of the Atlantic ocean, to tlie Agents at St. John, “ Pay all losses without delay, and subscribe £510 sterling [: 25:0! to the relief fund.’ This did the *Qaeen’ tic ‘Liverpool, London and Globe!’ ‘Imperial.’ These grand old 1 ipanies stood, as it and hastened to

Three Men Drowned,

A man named McKeown attempted to enter the armory guarded by volunteers yesterday. Being stopped by the sentry he tried to seize the rifle, and the soldier stabbed him fatally.

To-day a large mob is on the streets and there is great excitement.

A one o’clock an Orangeman, with a lily in his coat, was shot dead on grew St. James’ Street.

The probability of a riot to-night hourly increases.

Every effort has been made by respect- able men of both parties te keep the peace.

There were three’ deaths by drowning here yesterday.
