Co-Hducation of the Sexes.
The United States Bureau of Educa- tion has, we learn from Science, pub- lished a circular of information, con- taining the results of an inquiry into the effects of co-educating the sexes in 340 cities and large towns of the Union. Of these, 321 practise co-education throaghout the Public Sebool course, 17 eo-edueate for partof the course, and 2 separate the sexes entirely. A careful analysis of the reasons adduced for co-edacation enables the editor to formulate them as follows :—Co-Educa- tion of the sexes is preferred where practised, because it is (1) natural, fol- iowing the uaual structure of the family and society ; (2) customary, or in har- mony with the habits and seutiments of every-day life and law; (3) «npartial, affording to both sexes equal oppor- tunities. for culture; (4) economical, using school ‘funds to the best advan- tage; (5) convenient, both to superin- tendent and teachers in assigning, grad- ing, instruction, and discipline; and (6) benefical, to the minds, morals, and development of the pupils. The pam- phiet concludes by observing -that “both the general instruction of girls and the common employment of women as publie-scheol teachers depend, to a very great degree, on the prevalence of co-education, and that a general discon- tinuance of it would entail either much increased expense for additional build- iags and teachers, or a withdrawal of educational privileges from the future women and mothers of the nation.’’
