‘The Pacific Railway.

Tue Toronto “Telegram” says: ‘‘ Tire leag and short of the discussion of the Carada Pacific Railway question seems to ba this - that as the representatives of the people in Parliament have decided that the read must be built without unnecessary de- lay, the way in which it can be sbuilt with least pressure upon the people is the best way to build it. It is altegether likely that the road will be handed over to a company —not only to build it but to run it after it ia built, so that the people will have no risk in the matter at all, and will not be further taxed in regard toit. If it is built by a company, one of the first results will be to bring a large amount of money into the conntry fer labor, instead of a large amount being taken out jor interest. England is overtlowing with money at present, seeking investment ; so that Sir John should have little diticulty in bringing negotiations to a

A Fraud.

We are informed that the notices calling for 500 laberers to work in St. Stephen, New Brunswick, are merely a trap for discontent- ed men. Ia response to similar notices, it is said that a number of poor men went ever there in the spring ; and, having spent their last dollar on the passage, obliged, after a long search for employment, te work at nominal wages until something aheuld turn up. for thein had they rather borne the ills they complained of here than flown to others they knew not of.

The Prince Impesrial Memorial.

A Leadon despatch ef the 19th inst. ,states that owing t the pressure which has been brought te bear upon him in reference to the erection of a monument to the late Prince Napoleon in Westminster Abbey, Dean ‘stanley has decided not to insist upon his original preject. It is now said that the statue will be placed in St. George’s chapel, Windsor Castle, with the Queen’s approval. Tothis it is net thought any aeriens objection can be raised quarter.

The annual picnic of the Sunday School scholars of the Methodist Church was held at Schurman’s Point on Wednesday last. A large number of scholars and their friends attended. ‘They spent a very pleasant time at the point. The only thing which hap- pened to dampen their spirits was In com- ing home, when the boats, leaded with children, went aground on the flats. It was late at night when they arrived at the wharf.

The Tea held at Alberton on Wednesday last was well patronized. A train of fifteen cars passed through here with passengers, On Exhibition Day ample provision will be made to sapply visitors with ‘‘ goed things.” The Ladies of the Methodist Church intend having a Refreshment table. The Ladies of the Baptist Chureh also intend providing one.

Jon McKenzie, Esq., is spoken of asa candidate for the vacancy in the Town Council. It is not likely there will be any opposition, asin the course of a few weeks a new Council will have to be elected.

David Montgomery, Esq., met with a severe accident the other day. While ex- amining his new vessel, he fell from the scaffolding, a distance of twenty feet, and breke his arm just above the wrist, besides sustaining some other injuries. Mr. Mont- Gomery is able to be about, although it is evident he got badly shaken.

The Baptist Church here has secured the services of the Rev. W. B. Hinsen, who will enter upon his duties as pastor of the church on Sunday next.

Neil MeKelvie, Esq., the obliging man ager of the Union Bank here, started on Tuesday morning on a pleasure trip to the Upper Provinces. Mr. Green, who has been appointed accountant of the above Bank, will be in charge during Mr. MckKelvie’s absence.

Bears have been making considerable des- trnetion in Piusville among the sheep of lat». Several dead carcasses have been found pirtly devoured within the last few days. About fifty men, well armied, scoured the woods on Saturday, buat Bruin, it seems, put them all at defiance.

Paul Snake, a nephew of Chief Joseph whose death we chronicled a few weeks ago, died at the camp, at the head ef Central street, on Thursday morning last. Paul was an aged man, being in his 84th year,

The singular disappearance of Mr, Alex. Campbell, manager of the Campbell tobacco factory at Montreal, has taken place. Mr Campbell was formerly manager of McDonald’s tobacco factory for 18 years, but abeut two years ago, he mysteriously left the city, it was siidat the time, for domestic troubles. After a lengthened absence, no one knowing where be was and it being surmised he had cormnait- ted suicide, he returned.
