The Glee Club were in good voice, and old Neptune was seren- aded by the festive strains of ** Merrily we roll along,” ‘‘ Evilina,” ‘‘In the morning

TEEMER EASILY DEFEAT!; HANLAN,
The race between Hanlan and Teemer, three miles with a turn, for $ 000a side and the championship of America, took place at Toronto on Saturday afternoon, resulting in an easy victory for Teemer. It was feared that the race would not come off, owing to the lumpy condition of the water, but during the day the wind changed and by four o'clock, when referee Busbie went over the course, the water was comparatively smooth and he or- dered the men out. They agreed to be at the starting point at 5.30 o'clock sharp. it is estimated that over 20,000 people were assem- bled on the island to witness the race, and the course was lined with hundreds of boats of every description. There was little or no betting, offers of $300 to $200 and $500 to $300 on Hanlan being made without any takers. The general belief was that Hanlan would win and even Teemer’s friends held back, refusing to bet, except at long odds. The judges were Peter Dwyer, of New York, for Teemer, and John Davis, of Windsor, for Hanlan. At 5.30 Hanlan made his appearance, which was the signal for great cheering. Teemer quick!y followed, and was also greeted with cheers. Both men were in splendid condition. and a race for blond was anticipated. Teemer won the toss, and chose the south side of the course, which was nearest the shore. At five minutes past six, when the men got into posi- tion, referee Busbie sang out, ‘‘Are you ready, go,” and Teemer instantly shot to the front. The pace for a few minutes was terrific, Han- lan pulling 32 to the minute, and Teamer 33. Teemer kept about a couple of lengths ahead all the way down to the turning point. Here both made an ugly turn, Teemer strik- ing his buoy, which delayed him for a second or two. He turned, however, five seconds ahead of Hanlan. By this time they were pulling, Hanlan 29 and Teemer 34. =‘ Shortly after starting on the home stretch a yacht clumsily fouled Teemer and delayed him for a few seconds, but not sufficient to enable Haulan to geton even terms with him. He spurted and quickly placed three lengths be- tween himself and Hanlan. MHanlan’s friends encouraged him in every way ard he gamely re- sponded, but it was no use.
