A coLrsston between two disorderly driven teams occurred on Prince Street near Quirk’s Steam Bakery, on Saturday even- ing. One of the sleighs—belonging to Mr. John Gates—escaped without injury ; but the other—-the name of the owner we did not learn —was almost demolished.

An old man named Noonan met with a4 very scrious accident on Sunday morning. He was leaving St. Dunstan’s Cathedral after hearing early Mass, when descending the outer steps he slipped, fell, and his right thigh came in contact with the top of the step. He was lifted and taken into the tower, when, on examination, it was dis- covered that his thigh was broken. He was then removed to Dr. Taylor's and his leg was set. As Mr. Noonan is a very old man, it isnot likely he will recover from his injuries.

Wer have received a letter signed by Messrs. F. H. Campbell and J. T. Leeming, commenting on the speeches of Messrs. C. Palmer and E. J. Hodgson in the riot cases. We are of opinion that the course taken by the Argus and Patriot in commenting as they did upon the counsel’s speeches, was highly improper, and in that opinion we are upheld by Mr. Justice Hensley in his charge in McUloskey’s case. We, therefore, must decline publishing the letter, and thus fall- ing into the same error which we condemned : in our contemporary.

Own Saturday evening the Hillsborough ice in front of Queen and Peake’s No. 1 Wharves presented a very lively appearance. On it there were no less than fifty horses practising in real turf-like style. 1t was as tine an exhibition of race-horses as was ever before seen outside a trotting park. Among the fastest we noticed Mr. A. N. Large’s ‘“*Bush” and “ Fairy,” Dr. Jenkins’ ‘‘Queen” mares, Mr. J. R. Brecken’s ‘‘Island Boy,” Mr. R. Steele's ‘‘Dean Swift,’ Mr. R. Crabbe’s young bay horses and Mr. A. A. Holme’s young black horse. Can nota first-class match be arranged for Saturday next!

A Vintace Swerr Away.—SAwn Francis- co, Feb. 27,—It is reported that the village of Isleton on Andrus Island in Alta, Sacra- inento River has been swept away in conse- quence of the pressure brought upon the levees by cutting in dykes on Grand Island just across the river. Reports are continu- ally coming in of disasters by flood in the Sacramento Valley. Water covers the whole country, and the destruction of pro- perty from Colus to the moath of the river aggregates miillions, With but too or three exceptions, as far as learned, there is no loss of life, The Legislature has appropri- ated $25,000 for the benefit of the sufferers.

A cuRIovs question has been recently mooted in the Courts concerning the powers of a Jus- tice of the Peace for the whole Colony. The question is whether such a Justice is not only a Justice of the Peace for each County, and therefore in discharging an official act relat- ing to a matter in any particular County, whether the Justice, though appointed for the whole Colony, should not exercise his official duty in the County to which the act done re- lates. For example, whether a Justice of the Peace for the whole Colony residing in Queen’s County can take acknowledgment of dower of land in King’s County, without being in King’s County at the time of taking such an acknow}- edgment. ‘The question is a new one, and seems to be attended with rauch doubt, and kL. decision according to the view now suggest may be attended Sith serious resulta to parties whose interests depend on acts of Justices for ,# whole Colony.

Founp Lyina Deap tn A Yarp.-—About seven o’clock this morning Officer Marshall, of the St. John Police force, was informed by a boy that a woman was lying dead in a yard back of the house, near the Bethel, on Duke street, and occupied by ‘* Ned Mul- doon. He went with the boy, and having seen the woman lying there dead, he noti- fied Coroner Earle, and Constable Powers, who had the body removed to the Dead House. The body is that of Mrs. Eliza Haines, a woman of about 50 years of age, who lived with a colored woman in the up- per part of Muldoon’s house. She was seen alive by the occupants of the house yester- day afternoon, when she started to go down town. This was the last time they saw her until this morning, when they found her lying dead in the yard. She was lying across a log, and it is supposed that she was under the influence of liquor, and coming along the yard stumbled against the log an fell, striking her head with such force es the ice as to stun her, and that lying wit her head down she smothered, or perhaps the fall itself was sufficient to cause death. ‘The ice this morning where she had lain _ covered with blood, showing that the woun

LonpDON, March 4. | A despatch to Reuter’s telegram company from Constantinople, under date of Saturday evening, says ‘‘ that the Russians have made substantital concessions regarding the boun- dary of Bulgaria.” St. Pererspurnau, March 3. | The *‘Agerce Russe” cites a special despatch from Vienna in the ‘ ah Telegraph” of March Ist, stating that the Russians are bent on entering Constantinople, with or without the Sultan's consent, and that England had notified Prince Gortschakoff that if Rassia pur- sued the latter course, the British Ambassador would be ordered to quit St. Petersburg.

The Ayence Russe says that this report re. fers to a past phase of the crisis, since which the Russians have occupied San Stefano, with the sanction of the Sultan.

A special to the Standard from Vienna as- serts that two divisions of Austrians will enter Bosnia in about ten days.

The Standard’s Constantinople despatch: dated Saturday, the 2nd, says that the Grand Duke Nicholas will probably visit Constanti nople on Monday, and it is said wben the Treaty of Peace is signed he will move his headquarters to Ferekina: Miltar, twomiles off Pera.

The S‘andare’s correspondent at Vienna states that the Austrian and British Ambas- sadors have been instructed to protest if the Russians enter Constantinople.
