Having been designated as Runners-up” after the ,U.A.A. finals in Halifax ey had been invited to ticipate in the C.I.A.U. id—western basketball urnament that would ~ide on an entrant to the 315 to be held in Halifax is coming weekend.
For our first opponents we ew the Mustangs from the niversity of Western mario. As they were ranked . in Canada, while we were signated as # l 1, we entered is contest rated as under- g5.
However, our boys were I cowed by their highly garded opponents, led -3l at the half and after a ost dramatic finish, ended e game as 70-60 winners! In this final session neither am,» at, any time, enjoyed lead-2952f more than three ints, and a foul against the anthers, that might have ren the Mustangs a victory, as adjudged to have ‘turred a split-second after e final buzzer had sounded!

in the final game we were arched against the home— wn Waterloo Warriors, nzilists in last year’s armpionship round against t winning U. of Victoria. (‘oping against the tallest am they had encountered to year, the Panthers were Uiplayed throughout most fthe first half but rallied 1141‘32 at the break.
in the second session the 'tirriors made it 49-32 very unckly but then, for ten
while Tejan Alleyne had 17. It was a fine showing by a talented and courageous team. We’re proud of them! U.P.E.I. fans were some- what startled to learn that our
Basketball Panthers are probably the A.U.A.A. champions!
In another surprising dis- closure Saint Mary’s an— nounced that they have been using a player (freshman and A.U.A.A. “Rookie of the Year”, Ron Lardge) who is probably ineligible and so they have relinquished the title which they seemed to have won when they beat us in the tournament final.
If they are out we should be in and there has to be a champ!
Inasmuch as this disclosure came after Saint Mary’s team had reached Fredericton, and there was not time to get a fourth contestant, their with- drawal gave Lethbridge a bye and must have killed interest in the tournament, as the
hometown U.N.B. Red Raiders were not highly regarded.
Lethbridge beat Brock in the final.
Now it appears that the BIG losers may be Dalhousie who are hosting the national finals in Halifax without any entrant for whom Halifax fans might be enthused.

Who but a real dyed-in- the-wool basketball enthusiast cares who wins Waterloo, Brandon, Lethbridge or Victoria?
There’s an old saying that all good things must come to an end and the final curtain has come down on Panther athletic activity which began on l7 Sept. last!
We take great pride in the accomplishments of our teams and Director Ed Hilton and all coaches are to be congratulated!
We have reached heights never before attained in Island University history!
The Field Hockey and Volleyball teams finished with improved records. Although out of post season play, both have been going through a building period
and look forward, with optimism, to next year. In Soccer we won the
Atlantic Championship and lost out l-0 in the Eastern Finals after experiencing fru- strating obstacles prior to the game.
In hockey we made the playoffs only to lose out 3-2 in both games to the U. de Moncton.
The Basketball Pantherettes finished second in the league and were ousted in playoffs by the Dal girls whom they
had twice beaten in season play.
In basketball, by a most circuitous route, we appear to be the A.U.A.A. champs! Two A.U.A.A. champion-
ships for little young U.P.E.l.!
That’s quite a record! It is particularly noteworthy when we note that most of our coaches are part-time and that the full time ones have
other strenuous duties!
Good work all! Let’s aim for three next year!
Won’t somebody please accuse us of being a “lock” college?
Baskteball Panther Mike Morgan was chosen as a tournament All-star in Waterloo over the March 9-11 weekend. Way to go, Mike!
