"John," he said, "It is impossible. I love her as one loves a child. But I can't marry her." .

The nurse and Morton followed behind.

The porter descended. placing his portable step in position. Ho of- fered his own arms to help, but Parrish motioned him away with his head.

Carefully he mounted the steps and carried her into the car. The rear cud of it was open, as an ob- servation room. Next to it was o. chamber, larger than the ordinary drawing room, and in this there was a bed, lreaidy made up.

She was still weakly sobbing as he deposited her upon the bed In lier room.

Missonary Meeting

The W. M. S. of Geddie Memorial church, French River held their thank offering service last Friday evening, 20th Aug. in that historic church. There was o. very appre- ciative audience from the surround- ing settlements and Klensington, which comfortably filled the church.

They uisre fortunate in procuring Rev. Malcolm Campbell, D. D. of Montreal. who delivered a very eloquent-and impressive address. His text was from II Corinthians 6-9. “Unknown, yet well known." He emphasized the fact that it was not the position of life we occu- pied but having the spirit of Christ within us. When leaving his dis- ciples He told them t0 “Go ye into the whole world and preach the Gospel to every creature. Lo! I am with you always even unto the end." He praised the women of the Presbyterian Church past and prosont—who have followed that command, and helped place miss- ionaries in all parts of the world. The women have always lived near

cross and first at the tomb. Some say the Church is not n factor in the life of the people that modern amusements is IIPPQPIIIOB! with so many—but in spite of all this frivoilty, Christ ls still the greatest power in the world. We are proud that we belong 1° U19 Presbyterian Church, but prouder still that we are members of the Church of Christ.

There has been many red-letter days in the history of this "Old Church" and this one will be num- bored among them by all those who were privileged t0 bear Dr. Camp- bell's eloquent address.

The members of this W. M. S. wish to thank the Kensingtou quartette, Mr. nnd Mrs. Ramsay. Miss Dulziel and Mr. Hlitz who so beautifully sung, "We will follow Him", also Mrs. Angus Green and _ Mrs. George Riley of Clifton who rendered a charming duet "Oh! What n Friend”, especial tbuuks are due Miss Anna Riley of Clifton the accompanist for the evening.

In Memoriam MR. ALFFIEFl-I lVicEWEN.

The death occurred in Ch'town. on July 30th of Mr. Alfred H. Mc- Ewen a. former resident of Bristol, Lot Deceased, who was in his 54th year became ill three years ago and after undergoing medical treatment. for n time seemed to improve, but he never fully regain- cd his former health and vigor and the end came quite suddenly on the above mentioned date. Mr. McEwen was a man of sterling principles and high ideals. He was the very soul of truth and honor, and was much respected for his honesty and uprlgihtness in all his dealings with his fellow men, of a retiring unassuming disposition, his gentle lovable qualities were best known to his relatives and in- timate friends by whom be was much beloved. His funeral was held on Sunday Aug. 1st from the residence of his brother, Mr, Ham. mould McEwon to Lot 40 church. Service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Charmer of the United Church, Mt. Stewart. and his remains followed by a large concourse of people were tenderly Si- P6181"! cemetery. there to await the ressurecllon morn when the shadows flee away and those angel faces smile which we have loved long since and lost a while,
