“Alice Alice!’’ I wailed out, as I sank tc the floor overcome by the awful sound of a woman’s death cry.

For I knew there was no hope, one giance down into that tossing, seething liquid, at the rows of shining steel fangs that crossed the great tun from side to side, up and down never pausing an instant in their work, told me that no human being, falling in there could live.

My thoughts now turned to the wretch who had murdered her. There he stood, still leaning over the railing, looking down at the body of his silent victim, and deaf as it seemed, to my cries. Sud- denty he seemed to remember where he was; and springing erect, he turned with staggering step toward the ladder on the top rung of which I was crouching.

‘‘Murderer!’’ I shrieked with all my might as I clung to him like a tigress, hanging with the whole weight of my body to one of his arms, in the wild hope of detaining him till some one should hear me and come to seize him. He did not utter a word, but straggled to free himself from me, dealing blows on my bead and arms with his disen- gaged hand,

‘Who are you? Who are you?’’ I cried, franticaliy. ‘Is it Egbert Lloyd? Who is see’’

The man made no answer.

Renewing his efforts to free himself with greater violence than ever, he struck me a blow on the head which half stun- ned me, and then, when I relaxed my hold a little, tore my hands off his arm and flung me down. Luckily for me, we had got further along the gallery during the struggle, so I was not thrown down the ladder, but only on to the boards. I heard the man's rapid footsteps as he ran down the steps, and then for a few moments my head got confused, and although I did not faint, I forgot where I was.

I heard voices below. ‘‘Help!’’ I called out feebly, and the voices ceased.

‘‘Help!’’ I repeated, ‘‘come quickly, quickly. Miss Clarke has been mur- dered!’

There were the shouts and the noise of men's 9 tsteps as they raced up to the rail to which I was still clinging. dizzy and half blind. Higgins was the fore most man.

He supported me, saying in an agita- ted voice: “You don’t mean it, miss; surely you don’t mean it!’’

“It is true, true. The tunroom—the great tun!’’ I gasped.

“So, I am all right; go!’’

Without another word Higgins left me and ran off,

When I had recovered a little I dragged myself back toward the tunroom.

Higgins and three other men were there, crowding around ashapeless object on the floor,

Higgins heard my step and springing at me, gently led me away.

The machinery which worked the tun had now been stopped and there was dead silence in the place, broken only by @ hushed, awe-struck whisper from the men standing round the dead woman. Higgins wouldn't listen to my questions; he said I waan’t well enough to talk then, it would all have to be looked into to-morrow.

‘But, Higgins,”’ said I, ‘did any man pass out of the building while you were down there near the door?’’

‘Well, nobody passed ont except just Miss Clarke's intended, Mr. Lioyd.”’

“‘Ah!’’ I almost shricked.

“Why, you don’t go for to suspect him, surely,’’ said the watchman.

But I said nothing.

I let Higgins lead me back to the house where all was quiet. I crept to Mr. Jones’ door and knocked, at first softly. There was no answer, and I repeated my knock. At last he answered from the bed in the half-stupid tone of one roused suddenly from sleep,

‘Come, come! Something horrible has happened.

I heard him get out of bed; in an- other minute he was at the door, not yot half awake.

“Something happened?’’

But the next moment he caught sight of my face.

“Why, child, you've hurt yourself,’ he said, as I leaned against the wall.

“It isn’t that. I don’t know how to tell you! But oh,you would have to hear to-morrow, and it’s better you should hear it from me. Poor Alice!—”

I broke down.

“You don’t mean to say they have been playing those tricks on her again!”’

“Oh, no, no, no, Worse, much worse than that! How can I tell you? How can I!’’

“‘Good gracious, Winnie, you frighten me. Quick, child, has anything happened to her? Where is she?’’

He made a step forward in the direo- tion of her room.

“Oh no,not in there! She is dead! She has been murdered !’’

“Murdered! Alice!"’

He staggered back, and over hia face

there came a strange wild look as if the ae he heard was beyond comprehen- 810n. “Yes, yes, it is true. She went through into the brewery and some one went after her. I followed, and I heard a struggie up in the gallery above the great mash tun. Then there was a shriek, and she was thrown in! Oh! I carnot bear it! I can hear her ory still!’’

‘I shall go all the same,’’ said Mr. Jones, ‘‘he will not be able to deceive me.’’

At that moment there was a sound at the door, and Higgins burst in. But not before Mr. Jones, with, as I thought, a cowardly fear of hearing more horrible details, had retreated into his own room,

‘“‘Mr. Jones, sir, I want to speak to you. I won’t keep you a moment, sir."

“What is it?’ asked Mr. Jones in a voice which was faint and weak with emotion. ‘‘If it is about this awful trag- edy spare me to-night.’
