New York, Oct. 17.—The Columbia beat the Shamrock fully a mile and a half in aten knot breeze. The weather was foggy and this may have something todo with the challenger’s defeat. But the Columbia ovtfooted and outpointed her opponent from the start to the finish and was quicker in etays,

Tbe Columbia’s new sails almost trana- formed her and she sailed like a new beat.

The Columbia wins by 10 minutes and 14 seconds, actual time,aod 10 minutes eight seconds corrected time.

The yachts finnisked nearly half an hour withio the time limit.

The race to-day will be over'a triangular course of ten miles to the Jeg and the Shamrock will have an opportunity to show what shecan do on her favorite geint of sailing.

Lonvoy, Cct. 17.~-The war news is stil] in the region of surmise.

There are rumors that the Boers have been repulsed at Mafeking and are attack - ing Vryburg. A Uape Town paper has a despatch from Orange River, stating that the telegraph wires have been cut between Vrysburg and Kimbe:!y audibat the Boers are taking advantage of the presence of a large gathering ofdisloyal farmers at Vrys- burg, celebrating Naetmaal, to attack the town hoping that the farmers wil! assist them against the British.

The same despatch says that the British force at Kimberly is confident of its ability to held out, but urges the immediate des ~ patch of a relief force.

This question of the possible rising Or farmers in the northern portions of Cape Colony is very important.

Tke Daily Mail's correspondent at Coles~ burg has been erquiring regarding the maiter, and on the whole thinks the chances are against arising.
