‘ 'lhe first Student Council meeting of the '78 - '79 academic year was held on Sunday night, Sept. 17 in the Conference Room in the Kelley Building. The meeting was a lengthy one and only six of the nine topics on the agenda were covered. .
Present at Was the executive of the Student Union comprised of Kevin Gauthier, pres— ident; Dave Connaughton, L vice—president; John Neville, treasurer; Mike Kennedy, comptroller; Maria Driscoll, communic— ations officer; Also present were Arts Reps. Susan Boyd, Linda \ Dunning, Ivan MacArthur, Heather Ronalds; Education Rep. Betty MacDonald; Science Reps. Darlene Madflevin,
Robert Coles and Senator , Emmanuel Amobi.
The meeting started with an «introduction of all members. ‘ President Gauthier welcomed new members to their first Council meeting. Alan Hilton was approved as interim ,speaker and the meeting got under way with a smmary of srmmer ' ~ operations. .
Mikel Kennedy, comptroller reported that extensive repairs and renovations were done on the Barn over the summer to the tune of $23,000. ‘ A new roof was put on, the cafeteria moved from the 2nd Floor to the 3rd Floor, new furniture bought for the Panther Lounge, the stairwell taken out on 2nd Floor and new tables and , . chairs for the 2nd Floor
bought. 'lhe executive is looking into the possibility- of obtaining a hard liquor license for the Panther Lounge. 'Jhe lounge will not be opened for at least- . another week untilal]; renovations. :aref.) ' ’ Completed. : "

‘ Judicial Committee has
been changed to the Student Discipline Committee. The reason for the change was that Senate has changed the student rules and regulations Handbook and the S.J.C. was no longer responsible for - disciplinary actions in' the residences.
John Neville, treasurer, presented the ’78- — '79 budget. 'UPEI Student Union will be operating on a deficit budget for the first time in the past three years .‘Ihe reason given for this wasth the Student Union paid off the remainder of the debt on the Barn last spring and also the cost of renovating- over the summer. 'Ihere ' have been cuts in most of the sub—committees, the most notable being‘the SUN and Radio Station.
'lhe SUN was cut from
$8553 in '77t'78 $6000 for '78-'79 and CIMN frcm $3686 to $2000.
‘ 'Jhese cuts will mean a
tightening of a few belts but shouldn't cause too many problems. The SUN will not be as large and will produce fewer issues, and CIMN will. not have a B.N. machine and will probably not broadcast out—of—province sports events. . ‘Ihe date for the Student Union By—Elections was set for Oct. ll. Nominations open on Wednesday, Sept. 27 and close on Oct. 4th. Election or Campaign Week will run from_Oct. 4th
. to midnight of Oct. 10th.

4) 1 Board of Governors Rep.
Nomination forms may be picked up at the Student Union offices in the Barn. A referendum for A.F.S. may also be held on that
date. Although a referendum was held last February during the general elections and UPEI students voted to remain members of A.F.S. , a number of members of our executive feel that we should discontinue our involvement in the organization. 'Ibny Kelly, a member of the A.F.S. staff, was present at the meeting, but due to the length of the agenda and Shortage of time , the mat r was
put off until the next meeting.
Communications Officer Maria Driscoll reported that CIMN will be on the air this week. All their ted'mical problems have been ironed out.

‘ Al Ward presented his oudget for- the coffee
shops (Exdiange) for this semester. It appears that there will be 12 to 14 coffee shops this semester. 'Ihey will be held in the Panther
Lounge on Wednesday nights.
