JANE URQUHART AT UPEI

Internationally acclaimed and award-winning author Jane Urquhart will present this spring’s Confederation Lecture on Thursday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the Duffy Building amphitheatre on the UPEI campus.

Her presentation is entitled “The Characters I Have Been, or Why the Lost Boys Are Annoying.” Her talk will include reflections on L.M. Montgomery’s influ- ence on her writing, including Urquhart’s latest novel, The Stone Carvers.

~ Jane Urquhart has been one of the most popular fiction writers in Canada since the 1980s. In the past decade, Urquhart has joined other celebrated Canadian authors in making Canadian fiction immensely successful internationally.

Her fiction has won such awards and honours as the Trillium Book Award, The Marian Engel Prize, and France’s Le Prix de Meilleur Livre Etranger (Best Foreign Book Award). Her previous novel, The Underpainter, won the Governor- General’s Award for Fiction. Another novel, Away, was shortlisted for the presti- gious IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, and The Stone Carvers was a finalist for the Giller Prize.

-One reviewer writes that “Readers unfamiliar with Urquhart’s work will discover novels that display her ability to weave rich narrative tapestries which shift between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, between real and imagined worlds, and between characters, their settings and their stories.”

Urquhart, who lives in southern Ontario and spends part of each summer in Ireland, is also a warm, witty, dynamic, and much-loved speaker and reader.

The Confederation Lectures, featuring distinguished speakers: renowned in their fields, are jointly sponsored by the University of Prince Edward Island and the Confederation Centre of the Arts. On this occasion, the Lucy Maud Montgomery Institute is a co-sponsor, and Urquhart’s presentation is also a prelude to this year’s L.M. Montgomery international conference on the UPEI campus, June 20-23, with the theme of “L.M. Montgomery and Life Writing.”

There will be a book signing and reception after her presentation. Admission is free. For further information contact the L.M. Montgomery Institute at 628-4346.

Our list of presenters includes natur- opaths, reflexologists, spiritualists, counselors, homeopaths, and many more.
