A man named Jenkins. who is also called Professor, and the Canadian Blondiu, crossed the gorge below Niagara Falls on a tight rope on Thursday. using a machine of his own invention which looked something like a Velocipede. It is a bicycle, with Wheels three inches wide. grooved one and three-quarters of an inch deep, and made heavy and of wood. The two-inch hemp cable was fastened immovany on the American shore, but on the Canada shore coiled around a wind- lass. The man appeared at 2-30 P. am, and. mounting his machine, moved slowly forward, the rope swaying gently from side to side until the rider had passed out about ﬁfty feet, when he was photographed. after which he crawled alOng at a snail’s pace to the middle of the abyss. where he raised and waved his hat. From the centre to the American shore it was evidently hard to propel the bicycle. The time occupied in passing over the rcpe was Just eleven minutes. The crowd oilsight- seers was very small. and the receipts were only $350. while the expenses were $1H00. This apathy on the part of the public is very unexpected, but is highly gratifying.

Reports have been sometime in circulation, and con- tiuue to be Spread with increasing assurance of nego- tiations between Prussia and the Holy See, for the ac- crediting of a‘Papal Nuncio at Berlin, and the exten- sion of the inﬂuence of the Catholic episcopaey in that kingdom. Hitherto no positive facts have corroborated Such reports. however probable they may appear. cousi- dering the policy of King Willian to court the sym- pathies of German Catholics in order to obtain their support towards the establishment of a Prussian protec- torate over all Germany. Since 1866 monastic institu- tions have been greatly on the increase in Prussia, two hundred old convents having been roe-established and about one hundred and ﬁfty new ones founded in about three years. so that the total number of religious houses in the North German kingdom is now seven hundred, occupied by upwards of seven thousand monks. Thir- teen of these establishments belong to the Jesuits. The Court of Home naturally rejoices in this development of Catholicism under the leading regime of Germany, and is partly consoled by it for the sad defection of constitu- tional Austria.

During a violent storm at Blesheim (llaut-Rhinc) three days back tWD persons. Mr. Trouillct. a femur. and an old woman. being ovartaken by rain. sought shelter under a poplar. and Were both killed by the ligptning. The electric fluid struck Mr. 'I‘rouillet ﬁrst on the forehead and passed out at the back of the neck. rc~cntered the body under the shoulder blade, and es- caped through the chest, having perforated the heart. No marks were found on the other body.
