Covehead and Brackley Point Notes
The hotels in this vicinity are crowded The concert hetd in Covehead and Stan- hepe Hall on the 8th inst. was a success. The programme, consisting of yucal and in- strumental music and recitations was, on the whole, fairly well carried out. The evening was fine, the attendanve good, and the amount realized very satisfactory to all concerned.
We notice in a recent issue of the Patriot a labored account of what seems to an or- dinary mind a rather peculiar operation. The place was Willow Cottage, the time 3 p.m. ‘ Traveller,” in his report of the evening’s proceedings, claims to have been actually ‘‘ stuffed.” Now, that the opeva- tion in question is sometimes performed we will not attempt to deny, but how the victims are able to quack, gobble and crow after what is usually considered the last sad rite, is to us an unmitigated staggerer. The fact that this migratory bird has sur- vived the stufling ceremony, at least long enough to tell the tale, is calculated to raise hopes in the poultry yard which, in
\the natural course of events, must be
doomed to disappointment. Complaints have lately reached our ears of the peculiar actions of this Island of ours towards some of its visitors. It seems that whether they are returning weary and hun- gry from fishing expeditions, or refreshed and full from club dinners, their progress is seriously retarded by a rocking motion of the ground. Some evil-minded persons might, perhaps, be inclined to say that this phenomenon is caused by some part of the fisherman’s outfit or the diner’s menu, but as we do not belong to that class we would rather attribute it to some reprehensible laxity in the geological structure of the ‘‘gem of the sea.” Where is Mr, Bain, our geologist ? A writer in the Guardian, subscribing himself ‘Fair Play,” has taken upon him self to criticise our last notes. It is evi- dent that he has an axe to grind, and in order to do this he has thrust himself upon the people of Brackley Point as their champion. He does not, however, seem tu be aware that a more severe stricture on the intelligence of the people whose cause he pretends to espouse could hardly be imagined than when he poses as the dis- coverer of the mysterious fact that they have an ancestry. Uis reference to the pastor, too, in the midst of such an effusiou must be anything but flattering to him. It is no assurance, however, that the accent of the reverend gentleman msy not receive the same attention which was devoted to that of his eminent predecessor. The writer of Notes has no intention of criticiz- ing Covehead choir,and this was perfectly manifest to every intelligent reader who had no object in giving to what was said a meaning never intended. His talk con- cerning malice, splee:, and the gratification of spite is arravt humbug and nonsense, and but shows that he mistakes abuse for argument and high-sounding phrases for common sense. ‘Fair Play” ought to be master of the subject he wishes to eluci- date before presuming to speak thereon, and should remember the general truth that while there is nothing more com- mendable than a still tongue in an ignorant man’s head, there is nothing more detest- able than a loquacious nonentity. Truly, in this case, a mouatain hath conceived and brought forth a mouse. ‘* Brackley Beach Aggregation” made on the Ist inst. a somewhat lame attempt to carry out the programme arranged by them. The entertainment was beguu by the introduction of Mrs. Jarley’s wax- works. The gallant major, arrayed for the fray in ladies garb, advanced to the plat- form and with becoming maidenly modesty sought to explain the figures on exhibition. We could not always make out what was said, but we have nodoubt that the fair damsel well knew what she so verbosely attempted to explain. We will reverently leavethe second performer, with his ‘* ideal hotel,” **feminine queen,” liberal offers to those contemplating matrimony, the benign wisdom which he and many others infused into the harmless little sillinesses, and to make but one step from the sublime tc the ridiculous, will pass on to the Joker. The stage manager announced that we were to be treated to a few *‘ jokes,” but he put us off our guard so much by adding the startling assertion that they would be of that peculiar class which need no explan- ation, that we were quite unprepared forthe exercise in patience which was about to be inflicted on us. It was certainly a refreshing view to see the leader of the ‘‘ag- grevation” so artistically and becomingly at- tired, but to be compelled meekly to submit to what he seemed toexpect to taken as jokes was a somewhat excruciating delight. One of the ‘‘jokes” being scarcely suited to a temperate climate such as ours will never flourish here except in a hot-house. Some of them bore traces of recent resurrection, but were so horribly mutilated as to be almost un- recognizable even to their most intimate ace quaintances. A few others again had at least the virtue of being socharmingly original that they will never be repeated. Notwithstand- ing that many by nature and practice were fully prepared to laugh should they receive the sligetest provocation, only a few isolated cases of indulgence in that innocent relaxation could be noticed—a fact goes to prove, if, in- deed, proof be necessary, that the valgar, grotesque and ridiculous are but sorry substi- tutes for the brilliant and ludicrous. We would like to mention other parts of the programme, but must content ourselves with expressing the hope that should the Aggrava- tion ever decide to favor us with another performance they will not presume so far op our ignorance as they did oa this occasion, we would like alsc to conclude with a verse, and as we have no poetic vein of our own, we feel that we cannot do better than quote the ode—a gem in its way—which flowed from that of the last year’s aggregation.

Conflicting Opinions.
The Prohibition Commission, taking evi- dence at Fredericton, hive obtained the foi- lowing famonz many statements of opinion: ‘‘Alexander Gibson, the lumber king of Marysville, said liquor had never been sold in that town. He got rid of men who drank as soon as he could. Temperance was the rule and the results were most satisfactory. He employed 1200 hands in summer and 2400 in winter. He preferred abstainers, and found them botter men every time. Prohibition in Marysville had a tremendously good effect. It would be a good thing for Canada. Em- ployes in the trade would find work in other ousiness.
Chief Justice Sir Jobn Allen had very rare- iy seen a person drunk on the street. He would not favor prohibition, bat if public sentiment were behind such a law, it would do a great deal of good.
Judge Frazer thought in the present state of pubic opinion, prohibition could not be ea- forced. The sentiment in favor of total ab- stinance was growing.
Bishop Coadjutor Kingdon expressed him- self strongly against a prohibitory law. It
would not accomplish heey and if flagrant- ly violated would do harm,
- Couaty Court Judge Steadman said the
Scott act had largely reduced the sale of liquor in Fredericton and that prohibition could be enforced. In the Scott act counties of Queer’s and Sunbury hardly any liquor was sold. Two-thirds of the criminal cases coming before him had their origin in the liquor trade, bat
crime had greatly diminished.
Rev. Mr. Alexander thought a prohibition
law would be considered unjust and contrary
to the law of God. The drink traffis should
be monopolized by government.
John A. Morrison said the Scott aet was a perfect farce. Out of one hundred mem em- ployed by his firm, ninety-five drank. He favored high license.
Fi. A. Pitts thought the Scott act a marked success. Prohibition law would be supported by two-thirds of the people,

speaking to-day in reference to the recent inspection of the eastern immigration agencies, says he has not yet decided what changes to make. He favors an arrangement by which a portion of the staff at Quebec could be sent to Halifax in the early spring before the navigation of the St. Lawrence opens and when the work at Halifax is the heaviest. On the opening of the St. Lawrence route the Quebec staff would return home, accom- pauied by « portion of the staff of the Halifax agency. In this way the expenses of the two agencies in the matter of extra assistance would be materially reduced.
NasnvILie, Tenn., Aug. 14.—A special from Cowan, Tenn., says that on Saturday morning, after the convicts had entered the mines at Tracy city, about four hundred armed men walked into the stockade, and after clearing it uf everything of value, set it on fire and burned it to the ground. They then marched to the mines aad or- dered that the convicts be brought out. They took charge of them and the guards, loaded them in box cars and ordered the conductor and engineer to leave immedi- ately. Being covered by guns they were obliged to obey. The train arrived here at Lp.m. Capt. Burton, with twenty-five guards, took the three hundred convicts in charge, and they are under control. Be- tween Seivanee and Monteagle the convic's cut the train in two and ten or fifteen made a break for liberty. Several shots were fired. Matt Wilson (white) was killed, and Tom Smith (colored) was wounded. Six or eight escaped. The released prison- ers were taken to Nashville and placed in the penitentiary.
Borrato, N. Y., Aug. 13.—Switchmen in the Lehigh Valley, Erie and Buffslo yards struck this morning fur ten hours 4 day. The strike will probably extend over these entire systems and other roads. The men now work twelve to fifteen hours. They want extra pay for time over ten.
BrussE.is, Aug. 14.—A dynamite cart- ridge exploded this morning under the window of a cafe at Ostend, the fashionable summer resort of the Belgian aristocracy and European nobility. The cafe was wrecked and several persons injured, three fatally. Great excitement prevails.
