Editorial 5: Choosing Best Line Possible

Sitting at edge of rugby field in Halifax, taking break from “indie record label and zine fair”; part of Halifax Pop Explosion. Not watching rugby, just sitting on bleacher as it is closest thing to park bench nearby. Possibly. Must travel in straight lines from San Antonio’s Community Hall as possessing direction sense of drunken toddler. Do not want to get lost. Limited choice of direction not so bad really. As in everything, choos- ing best line possible is of utmost importance.

Is cold. Buddy Holly has fucked off with car and jacket. Thankfully still have sunglasses. Also: backpack. Will lose toque later in day..

Body is recovering slowly from immense breakfast/lunch (not brunch):

and eggs have slowed heart rate and congealed blood into jam like sub- stance. Inhalation of second hand smoke unhelpful. Stomach and intes- tines currently in state of anarchy. Am engaged in serious attempt to look as

though not in pain, and everything is”

good and normal. Am an excellent actor. And no one watching. Damnit.

Am reading Ghost World ($15.00), bought at ‘zine fair. Disappointing so far, as is filled with myopic young people in somewhat disjointed seg- ments revolving around complaining about things various and sundry. Feel that being myopic young person living life in disjointed segments makes pur- chase of book describing same rather redundant. Like watching Seinfeld. Further feel that I have market cor- nered on most things complaint relat- ed. Consider writing book.

(A “zine” is roughly analogous to a magazine, except that zines are most often self-published and are relatively inexpensive in production costs and

cover price. And no advertising eye- sores.)

Return to fair. Purchase Why I Can't Get My Homework Done ($0.50). Is very nice story about girl and cat, and eventually TV. Excellent hand drawn pictures. Staple binding dangerous though. Wish again that I could draw. Anything at all. Not picky. Would set- tle for reasonable facsimiles of geo- metric shapes even.

Purchase issues one through five of Zeitgeist the Canary ($9.00). Brilliant cartoon involving canary, cutting insight into world at large, surrealism, sarcasm. Am suddenly filled with renewed vigor and desire to write. Excellent, as have many pieces of writing pending and due to various people of varying levels of under- standing as relates to myopic young people, and their inability to stick with deadlines or really get any fucking work done at all. :

Am happy again that I have fled to Halifax for Pop Explosion, abandon- ing things needing to be done in favour of punk, hip-hop and amateur writing. Am not “Inspired” per say, as. am not an “Artiste” per say, though am plenty self indulgent and pretentious. Am instead reminded by room full of tables full of words created out of love of creation first, and all else distant second, [moral:] that (school)“work” and writing need not be tiresome and trying. That work and writing might actually be worthwhile..

Postscript:

Am somewhat displeased as attempt to write editorial without use of “I” or “the” has failed. Am further saddened by loss of black toque.
