Good news has come from the short grass prairie region of Saskatchewan.

Farming practices have reduced this cover type to a minimum in Canada and it is a critical habitat for many species. Mr. Peter Butala, owner of 13,108 acres located west of Clayton, combined his efforts with those of the Nature Conservancy of Canada, SaskPower, the Province of Saskatchewan, Environment Canada, and a consortium of conservation interests to preserve one of Canada's best remaining short grass prairie regions. The Concerned Citizens of Eastern Kings won the Island Nature Trust's award for their campaign against the East Baltic Bog peat moss mining operation. Thanks in large part to their grass roots lobbying efforts, the development proposal was withdrawn and the site is now a natural area.

The Canadian Parks Service indicated that the Piping Plover in the Park achieved the highest fledging rate in the history of monitoring in the PEI National Park. This was great news for this species which has struggled in other parts of the Island.
