Distribution: Woodlands of Alaska and northern Canada south to southern California, the Texas panhandle, and the gulf coast.

P.E.I. Status: Resident.

Nest: Normally excavates cavity in a dead tree. Utilizes woodlands, primarily conifers (softwood) and mixed wood but also uses deciduous (hardwood) trees. Also frequents orchards, city parks, and suburban gardens, particularly those with suet feeders.

Eggs: 4 to 7, white.

Diet: Insects and eggs picked from under bark or chiselled out of galleries.

Song: Call is a soft "pik"; also gives a high, descending rattle or "whinny" series: "ee ee ee ee ee ee".

Size: 15 to 18 cm (6 to 7 inches).
