Organize Centre

A on of ubiic spirited citizens has organized The Physicalngullure alld Recreation Centre, adopting as the motto of the organization “HappineSS through health.‘

Membership in this centre is open to men and women over 81 years of age. Some persons under the age 21 will be ac- cepted as conditional members. The centre wtll provide much needed physical training, light exercise and competent instruct- lon. It will promote matches and contests which have as their objectives greater physical development: ' .

However, the gym 11 not open untll suff1c1ent money is raised to properly equip it and until a large enough member- ship has been obtained. Already a gym fund has been set

and this fund will be assisted by returns from the recrea- tion division which goes into operation lmmedlately.

THIS recreation division should be an interesting spot for sportsminded folks to gather. Here will be assembled sports records covering all branches of sport. A sportsman's Hall of Fame will be set up and this first year 51x local athletes will be chosen by competent judges to enter this Hall of

A Long, Long Haul

THOSE responsible for getting this centre underway main- tam they have been toying with the idea for nearly seven years. They are convinced there is a great need for such an organization and believing this, they have done something con- crete about it.

Those solidly behind the projects come from all walks of life. These folks quite properly insist that far too many people are getting far too little exercise. The exercise derived from walking is now almost zero because the vast majority of per- sons drive to and from work these days. Physical labor is in less demand than ever because of so many labor-savmg de- vices. Far too many men and women get no exercise what- ever and as a result they are growing ‘soft‘..

The Physical Culture and Recreation Centre hopes to cor- rect these things in the Charlottetown area. certainly will work any miracles overnight but it should prove a grea boon to many people who are getting no exercise whatever right now. Soft muscles should become hard, excess weight should start falling off and folks should start feeling loads heathier when they begin a properly balanced physical culture

BRANDON (CP) After ’taking two losses in his first three gomes, Glen Harper of Duncan, B.C., caught fire Wed~ nesday at the Canadian curling championships a n d me over the only two remaining un- defeated rinks on successive draws.

In the night draw he defeated Calgary sharpshooter Jim Shields 146 after having laced defending champion Ernie Rich- ardson 8-5 in the afternoon.

The result dropped Richard- son and Shields back into the two-way tie for first place in the round - robin competition, both with a single loss. In third place with two losses is Ian Baird of Kentvillc. NS.

A double-raise with his last rock gave Doug Gathercoie of Copper Cliff in Northern On- ario a 7-6 win over Baird in the night draw while Hersh Lerner of Manitoba took his fifth straight loss, 14-5. at the hands of Don ix of Moncton.

TORONTO (CP) - Toronto Maple Leafs trounced the trou- blesome Boston Bruins 4—0 Wed- nesday night in their drive to overtake Chicago Black Hawks at the top of the National Hockey League. Goaler Johnny Bower scored the Leafs first shutout of the season. kicking out 23 shots from a Bruins club that played as if they didn‘t believe they were finishing last in the NHL. Red Kelly scored twice, his 17th and 18th of the season, Dick Duff counted one, his 16th, and Frank Mahovlich blasted in son.
