OBITUARY.

The sad news of the death of Annie, be- loved wife of John D. McCarthy, of Morell, at the Charlottetown Hospital on the 4th inst., brought to the hearts of all who knew her feelings of deepest sorrow and well merited sympathy for her be- reaved family. Mrs. McCarthy, not feel- ing altogether as well as usnal, decided to go to the hospital on November 6th, where she maintained ausually good state of health until shortly before her death, when she was scized by a severe attack of hemorrhagof the Jungs, and died within

a couple of hours. Her remains were taken by train to Morel! station on Mon day evening, the 6th inst., where a_ large

number of mourning friends awaited their arrival and followed in solemn procession to her home. On Wednesday her re- mains, followed by a large concourse of mourning friends and relatives, were con- veyed to St. Joseph’s Church, where a tequiem High Mass was sung by Rey. A. McAulay. The ceremony was grand and impressive. At the conclusion, the cortege reformed and proceeded to the cemetery, where the last sad rites were performed. The deceased was 33 years of age, and leaves a husband, two children and a large circle of friends to mourn the loss of a virtuous and affectionate wife, a kind mother and a charitable friend.

THE WHITE SANDS PLE SOCIAL,

A grand Pie Social was held in the White Sands schoolhouse on Friday even- ing, the 10th of January instant. Although the night was stormy, the schoolbouse was crowed, even standing room was diffi- cult to find. All the ladies in the district were presen¢ besides a large number from the adjoining districts. At 7 o’clock, sharp, the curtain was drawn and the perfor— mance began. Jolin Kiely, Esq., presided. Besides the local talent that assisted we had from High Bank, Mrs. Hammond Nicolle, Miss Katie McSwain, Miss Flora C. McPhee, Miss Christie MeLeod and Miss Minnie Jordan, Caleb Jordan, Wy- cliffe Jordan, Henry Jordan. The order wa3 excellent. The ®llowing programme was disposed off in a manner that did great credit to the various per/ormers. Kach selection was greeted with great ap- plause :—

After the programme was ended the selling of pies began. Mr. David Glover acted as auctioneer, and did his part in a very able manver. The pies were all knocked down at a good figure.

Many thanks are due to the Commitiee in charge, especially to Mr. William Glover and Mr. William Clements, who know well how to make their neighbors feel happy on a stormy night iike the L0th. A nice sum was realized, and is for the benefit of the Schocl District. After the pies were sold each one went her cwn way accompanied by him.

THE WOMAN'S BIBLE.

It is Impossible to Take This Fanciful Pro duction Seriously,

It is hardly possible to take ‘*Ths Woman's Lible’’ seriously, so much of it is flippant and ridiculous; and yet it has a sober and significant aspect. The names ot the women who prepared it, as far as it given to the public, are well! known and highly respected. They repre- sent in a distinct and practical sense the cause of the emancipation of their sex, as they call it, and nobody is disposed to question their sincerity. But it may be well doubted if their attempt to discredit the Scriptures in the interest of the mothers and daug@ers of the world will prove to by successfal. On the contrary, it is likely to retard progress of the mcvement to enlarge the sphere of woman and abolish the discriminations which are o be unjust and injurious to her. These bold and eager critics of the great- est of all books do not speak by any auth- ority of superior ability in that relation, ani certainly they do not present anything that is either novel or impressive. The fact is worth noting by way of il- lustrating the general character of the book that, while it contemptuously rejects the story of the creation of woman out of a rib taken from Adam while he slept, the story of the serpent and the temptation of Kve is practically acceptel. Adam’s con duct in the case is severely and justifiably condemned, and we are told that “‘the un prejudiced reader must be impressed with the courage, the dignity and the lofty ambition of the woman.’*’ Thus thetouch of vanity that makes the whole sex kin serves to authenticate one miracle and to invalidate another in pretty contempt of the fact that they both have the same foundation and are equally credible.
