Wore Uniforms

Hitler and most others present wore their brown Nazi uniforms with mourning bands on the arms.

The room was well packed, and thousands of persons stood outside in the rain, not seeming to notice the inclement weather.

The Chancellor appeared a quite different man from the then har- rassed, pleading figure who less than a month ago from the same rostrum defended his summary ex- ecution of 7’! persons allegedly in- volved in mutiny against. his re- gime.

He appeared deeply moved by the sentiments he expressed. His voice and demeanor were quiet except for an occasional dramatic gesture.

With great. feeling, and apparent- ly with an eye to the plebiscite Aug. l9 in which he is asking ap- proval of his action in taking over executive functions, he referred to the "new resurrection" which “we want to preserve as a. precious heritage."

He referred rievcrently to “the unmeasurable service the Field Marshall General rendered histor- ically by reconciling in his name the best in Germany's past uriih the passionately yearned-for better German future."

In the early portion of his speech Hitler traced the career of the dead President from his birth through the wars of 1566 and i870 and told of his_ being twice recalled from the retirement to serve the Fatherland.

The first time was in 1914 when he won his great victory over the Russians, in memory of which Ger- many erected the Tannenbcrg monument where he will be buried. The second came in 1925 when he was first elected Reicnpresident.

Rejects Title

In the speech Hitler again rc- ferred to the fact that he is not

In speaking of the call o! Von Hindenburg to war in 1914, Hitler declared that the late President was "as innocent of the beginning of wpr as anybody in this world could be.”

After Hitler's speech. Hermann Wilhelm Goering, as President of the Reichstaig, speaking directly to Col. Oskar Von Hindenburg, who with his wife sat in front of the Rostrum. extended m the family the condolences of the nation. Among them was Franz Von Papen. friend of the dead presi- dent. who sat in the vice chancel- lor's place beside Hitler.

In the audience was former crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm, who was in the front row of the balcony as representative of his family. He was dressed in field grey uniform. For the first time in s public appearance Hitlcrwas given the salute of honor by the Reichswehr, which hu sworn personal alleg- lsnoe to him.

The death of Mr. William Ham- mil, of this City, occurred suddenly last evening at 6 o'clock in the Sac- red Heart Home.

Born 83 years ago in Charlotte- town, the late Mr. Hammil was lo- cated for a number of years at South Granville. where he carried on farm- ing operations, but eventually he rc- turned to the City. He had been en- joying good health, but was seized suddenly with a heart attack, and 1n a short time passed away.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. John Hagen, South Granville, and two sons, William E. Hammil, City, and James Austin Hanunil, in Uni- ted States.

The funeral will be held on Wed- nesday morning at 9 o'clock to St. Dunstans Basilica, thence to the Roman Catholic Cemetery.

In Memoriam

‘MRS. JOB’; M. MACLEOD

'I'here passed peacefully away at her late home in Upton on July l1, 1934, Mrs. John M. MacLeod, former- ,ly of Cardigan.

Mrs. MacLcod’s maiden name was Flora Jane MacNeil, daughter of Malcolm and Mary MacNelll, of Wood Islands West, Queen's County, |and was the last member of the

family. She was a. consistent mem- bar of the Presbyterian Church and was eighty-seven years of age.

She leaves to mourn the loss of a loving wife, her corrowlng husband. nieces and nephews and other rela- tives and friends.

Her funeral was held on July 13th and was quite largely attended. showing respect for the departed one and sympathy for the bereaved hus- band. The service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Firth of Dundas United Church and Mr. Gray of the Baptist Church. The remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Dundas Cemetery by the following pail bearers: Messrs. John MacKinnon, Allan MacSwaln, Daniel MacKinnon. Alfred Larthard, George- Stead and Murdock Mac- Leod. Charles Stewart was hearse driver.
