Hatirax, July 9.—The codfishery te- day is reported as follows: Good at Ellis Bay, Anticosti; poor at St. John’s River, good at Thunder River, very good at Shel- drake, Seven Islands and Grand River, fair at Newport Point and Perce, and poor at Paspebiac, Que. In P. E. Island some good catches were made at Souris. At Al- berton and Georgetown the catches were very light. Owing to the very heavy weather on the Cape Breten coast very little fishing was done. A fair catch was made at Mabou, and a few taken at St. Anns and L’Ardoise, A fair catch of shore cod was made at Canso, Lunenburg and Digby. Bankers in the vicinity of Canso are doing well when bait is procurable. Fair catches of herriog were made to-day at Perce, Grand River and” Newport Point, Que., but very few at Paspebiac, owing to scarcity, of bait. There was a good catch at Souris, but only poor at Georgetown. A fair cateh was also mace at Port Hawkesbury, ©. B., but none of any note at any other station. The mackerel fishery is very dull all over the coast, the only good catch reported to-day being at Souris.

House resuined committee of the whole to consider the Debentures Bill, Mr. James E. Macdonald in the chair.
After some time was passed in committee the bill was reported agreed to, without amendment.
The Loader of the Government moved that the bill be read a third time to-mor- row.
The Leader of the Opposition moved that it be read a third time this day three months.
House divided on the amendment, which was lost on the following division:
Ayes—McLeod, Bentley, Shaw, Arsen- ault, A J Macdonald, Clow, Underhay, Gordon, J _E Macdonald, McKay, Rogers, Sullivan—12.

Mr. Peters’ motion that the bill be read a third time to-morrow was then put and carried on division.
Mr. Matheson then submitted a bill re- specting the entailment of certain lands in Prince County. Read a first time.
The usual bill respecting the moneys voted for supplies was read a first, second and third time, and passed,
Hon. Mr. Peters submitted a bill res- pecting telephone extension in this Prov- ince which was ordered to be read a second time to-morrow.
Messrs H. C. Macdonald and McKay asked for information with reference to petitions sent in by certain persons in their respective districts.
Hon. Mr. McLean said the Government were considering the matters and would do what was right as soon as the session Was over.

Mr. Underhay asked the Commissioner of Public Lands if a petition from Kerin Larkin of Lot 42, asking for adjustment of his account in the Land office, had come under his notice, and if any order-in-council or report of the Commissioner had been made thereon. Also, if it 1s the intention of the Government to continue the employ- ment of a woodranger in the service of the department for Lots 42, 43, and 56.
Hon. Mr. McMillan said that he would attend to the petition of Kerin Larkin as soon as possible, and that the woodranger had been dismissed.
Mr. Clow asked for an explauation con- cerning the award of tenders for the Mur- ray [arbor packet service. He wanted to know why the highest tender had been ac-

A Plea for “Under the Palms.”
Sir,—Asan individual member of the community, and one who has had a good deaj of experience in matters pertaining to music, I beg through your colnmns to ex- press my regret on reading your notice in yesterday's issue that the gentleman who has devoted so much of his tine to the edu- cating and training of those who gave such a splendid rendition of the above-named subject, should have met with such a slen- der audience. Why, Sir, had the parents of the young folks enly showed their ap- preciation of what had been done for them and whav Christian sympathy was or might have been expected of them, Mr. Farnham would not be under the necessity of reduc- ing the entrance fee at his contemplated repetition to 10 cents. Had all felt as I did, and as some others I know, this would I believe, have been gladly accepted at 15, if not 25 cents.

Mr F. J. McLeod, of Harvard University, returned to his home in this city a few days ago. Besides many valuable prizes, and a fellowship worth $300 a year, Mr. McLeod brings home with him a silver cup as a prize for proficiency in football.
