Earl Spencer, Lord Lientenant, was present at Belmuilet, Connty Mayo, on the 28th ult., to witness the departure of a number of families by the steamer ‘* Phoeni- cian,” for America. Ear] Spencer, address- ing the state-aided emigrants, said the Gov- ernmeft had no desire to force any one from home.

The Catholic Bishop of Northampton who has just returned from Rome has issued and address to the Roman Catholics of Northampton, in which he warns them agarnst favoring the claims of an Atheist to sit in Parliament. Atheism, he says, leads to Socialism. They must, therefore, band together to keep out of Parliament an Atheist, who hes no idea of the first prin- ciples of legislation, whieh are Lased upon the existence of God.

The tenant farmers in England are agita- ting for tenant rights with a determination and vigor that does them credit. At a very large and representative assemblage of farmers and others interested in the culti- vation of the land at Sevenoaks, the follow- ing resolution was moved and carried unan- imously :—‘‘ That no measure of tenant- right will be satisfactory unless it secures full compensation for such of bis unexhaust- ed improvements as increase the letting value of his holding, and is suflicient to protect a continuing tenant against an arbitrary rise of rent on those impreve- ments.” te the Premier.

Lord Wolseley is certainly a clever as well as a successful general. In one of his lat- est speeches he praises everybody in power, and praise from a successful captain is very pleasant to men in office. That ia the greatest lesson that is taught us by the recent war. If this nation wishes to enjoy the blessings of peace, it is abso- lutely necessary that we, asa people and nation, should, at all times, be prepared to sustain the miseries which war may thrust upon us. A despetch from Detroit says a freight train on the Grand Trunk Railway ran into apassenger train near Olivet on Friday last. The air brakes on the passenger train did not work properly, and the train stopped. A siznai was sent back to the freight train following. For some reason it did not pay attention to the signal, and thundered into the rear of

the passenger, shivering two Pullman to fragments. Conductor . a
