was perhaps more than counterbalanced by the improvement in carriage horses. Mavy really beautiful animals were shown ; and the stock of ** Royal Harry ’ aud “All Right” were prominent amoogethe prize winuers. The first

prize for a stallion in this class went to King’s County; the second to Prince, ludeed the prizes for horses seem to have been well distributed over the Province. Mir. Craswell’s stallion was greatly ad- raired ; and though Mr. Craswell’s name does not appear on the prize list, his horse was certainly one of the most per- fect on the grounds. ** All Right” and * Blackfoot” carried off the honors in their class; aud were centres of atten- tion and admiration, as well as the cause of a dispute. Mr. Henry Lane’s colt by * Royal Harry,” is a great beauty, and so is Mr. Lemuel Sims’ colt by “ All Right.”’ ‘The classes of mares and fillies were well filled. Mr. Dockendorff’s mare is especially beautiful, and the same remark may be made about Mr. Boswall’s filly The horses were ‘‘ marched past” yesterday in the presence of His Honor the Lieutenapt Governor and many other gentlemen. The sight of so many beau- tifal animals was very pleasing.

Iu cattle aud sheep there has evidently been development and improvement ali round. The show in respect to them was certainly the best ever held here. The names of Henry Longworth and Albert Boswell stand out among the ex- hibitors in a very creditable way. But there was asharp and very good compe- tition from all parts of the Island. Prince County carries off first honors for the best bull, while King's takes the second prize. Qnueen’s has however,the satisfac- tion of standing first in respect to cows and sheep

CHAMPION CREAMER.

The dairy utensils exhibited yesterday by Jeoha E. Hicks & Brother, of Windsor Mills, P. Q., were novel, and attracted much attention from those who are inter- ested in dairies. His Champion Creamer (for raising cream) is the simplest and best arrangement for this purpose we have ever seen. The milk is poured through a strainer into acan, which is then set into a tub of cold water, a well, or a spring. In four or five hours the eream is entirely separated and rises to the top. The milk is then deawa off through a faucet and by ineans of a glass set in the ean the edge of the cream is easily seen, which is then drawn off into another vessel. The com- pactno-s and cleanliness of the machine is sts recommendation, and Mr. Hicks de- serves much credit for his enterprise in haviog his valuable appliances on exhibi- tor the inspection of our farmers.

ALEXANDRIA. LECTURE BY REV, HOWARD SPRAGUE. Rev. Howarp Spracur, M. A., delivered the opening lecture of the season, before the Y. M. ©. Association on Thursday evening, 13th inst:. subject: ‘‘Alexandria.” The lecture was an elaborate and eloquent history and deectiption of that great city, from the date at which it was foundeddown to and includivg the early period of Christianity. The lecturer began by giv- ing his audience an eloquent deseription of the Medo Persian Empire in the days ef Darius. That monarch possessed almost fabulous wealth, and could bring into the field an army of a million fighting men. The great objeet of this king was to over throw the Government of Greece, and to establish a new Umpire there. But the men of Macedon were brave, and they had Alexander for their leader. Mithridates led the Persian army. At the great battle fought on the plain of Marathon, half the Persian host lay dead upon the field, and their country lay at Alexander's feet. He then commenced his memorable mareh through Persia, entirely unsupported. Meanwhile the Persians gathered another army and met Alexander in _bat- tle at Issus, where they lest 10,- 000 men. The King of Macedon then continued his triumphant mareh through Western Asia into Egypt, selected a site, and founded the great city of Alex- andria in the year 331 B. C. He then went forward conqiiering and to conquer. Mexawhile Darius gathered another army on the plain ef Arbela. The gravity of the occasion was felt on both sides, and very careful preparatien was made. The fight waa long and bloody, and the little army of Alexander seemed about to be engulfed by its immense and powerful rival until its leader dashed into an opening into the left wing ef his foe, and one of his generals rushed into their centre and gained the day. The city and the waa'th of the coun- try then fell into Alexander's hands. He also took Susa the capital, and with it eleven million pounds sterling. He now led his army as faras Afghanistan aad came out upon the Indus by the Kyber Pass. His generals begyed to be led back to Greece, and he took them as far as Babylon. Within a few days the Con- queror was dead, giving directions that his

body was to be buried in Egypt, in the Tomple of Jupiter Ammon, a desire that was not fulfilled.

He was buried with imposing rites, and a splendid monument placed upon his grave. This monument has long since disappeared, but the City of Alexandria, his real monu- ment, still remains. The learning and philosophy of Greece were to be distributed through the nations, and Alexander was msde the medium of the distribution. Europe and Asia were altogether unlike in habits of thought, education, etc., and the conquests of Alexander, follewed up by those of the Saracens in later times, diffused the learning, cultivation and refinement of Greece and the countries of the East throughout the West. Of all the conquests of Alexander, none can bs compared in im- portance with the conquest of Egypt and the founding of the City of Alexandria. ‘The conqueror had been, from his youth, familiar with Homer, and carried with him in all his campaigns, in a golden casket, a splendid copy of the works of that poet. When he visited the Isle of Pharos, visions of a great commercial city lay before him. He himself planned and made provision for the building of the city. Twe streets, each two hundred feet wide, crossed each other in the centre of the city, and two safe and cemmodious harbors were constructed. The encouragement given by the suecessor of Alexander to learning and the arts and sciences, drew multitudes from Greece and other parts of Europe, and before the dawn of the Christian era, the population of the city hed increased te 690,000 souls. It was made the Lome of philosophy, literature, science, and the arts, ny of its public buildings, were splendid exhibitions of architectural skill, and of the liberality of the Ptolemy s, and it far surpassed the oldest cities of vither Asia or Europe. Alexander's body was removed thither. One third of the city was occuped with palaces and public gardens and greunds. A fire always burned on the top of the tewer of Pharos for the benefit of ships entering the port. This tower has given its name to every structure of the kind ereeted thronghout the world. But none of the sovereigns of the Mace- donian line who reizned over Egypt equalled the two first. After the battle of Pharaalia Pompey the Roman General, fled to Egypt pursued by Cesar. Ptolemy was conquered and the eity was taken. For many cen- turies afterwards, it was known as a City of the Roman Empire, and the granary of Rome.

In the 215th year of our Era, the Roman General, Caracella, paid it a visit, and or- dered that every young man capable of bearing arms should be prt to death. Caracella himself directed the slaughter, and beheld the sight. At its conclusion, he informed the survivors that, although spared, they were no better than those who had been slaughtered! Constantinople was made the centre of the power of the Christian Church in the East, and Alexan- dria assumed the character of a purely Egyptian town. The power of the Nile was transferred to the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn. The Mahommedan power swept over the eastern world, and the Syriam General spent fourteen months and lost many men in besieging and obtaining possession of the city of Alexandria.

Thetime will ex- pire on the 29th instant; and in order to give all Infantry officers an opportunity of qualify- ing before that date, application has been Made by the Deputy Adjutant General for authority to have Boards of Examination held at St. John, Galifax, and Charlottetown, P. E. I., which are the respective head-quarters of Nos. 8, 9 and 12, Military Districts, these boards to all assemble on the 27th instant, Officers who are only provisionally appointed and who desire to be examined for certifieate to qualify, should take advantage of this op- portunity; for the genera! order above quoted explicitly declares that ‘*‘ officers who co not qualify withia the time laid down, will hav their names removed froma the list ef oflicers of

SECOND ANNUAL MERTING—KEIGHTY TEACH-

ERS PRESENT.

The teachers of the Island met en Thurs- day forenoon, in the Hall of the West Kent Street Sshool, in annual convention, there were upwards of eighty teachers present. Twenty new names were added to the roll, amongst which we were pleased to see the name of Arehdeacon Read.

The usual committees being appointed, the exercises of the Convention were com- menced by Miss M. McLeed, of the Upper Prince Street School, giving a lesson to a class from the Infant Department on the **Look and Say” method of learning words. The lesson was very interesting, and it was surprising to see how quickly the little ones learned to recognize the words by signs.

An admirable paper was read by Miss J. MoPhail, of Summerside, on ‘‘ The Teach- ers’ Work—its responsibilities.” The great werk of the teacher being to train up the child se that he would eventually become a useful member of society. The writer con- tended that as man was not merely an in- tellsctual machine, but was a moral and physical being as well, the teachers work implied the training of the meral and phy- sical, as well as the intellectual, nature, and thus producing a well developed man, anornament and use to society. Correc- tion and punishment were judicious and should be pondered by all those teachers whose duty it was to train youth.

A lively discussion followed, partaker in by Rev. Dr. Murray, John McRae, Easq., Summerside; A. C. Dennis. Esq., Margate; and Neil McLeod, of Summerside,

—— oe Activety in the Montreal Potato Market.

The Gazette says: Alarge business has been dene in potatoes during the past few days, the easier phase of the market having enabled buyers to operate with much greater freedom. Yesterday about 3,000 bags of potatoes were sold in Lachine at 65c per bag of 90 lbs. In the eity three earloads of choice Early Rose were sold at 70c per bag, and two cars do at G6c. A carload of fine Goderich was also placed at 60c, and 400 bags of Chili at 65c. No less leas than seven or eight American buyers were in the city to-day. Large quantities of potatoes have been bought up in sections of the Eastern Townships bordering upon the line, at 40c per bushel, and buyers seem anxious to get them on cars and off to their Southern destination before the cold weather setsin. Shippers buying for the Western States have ex- perienced great inconvenience in forwarding supplies, owing to the Grand Trunk Rail- way having been compelled to raise Chicago freight, in consequence of a bleckade at Pert Huron; but is hoped that ebstructioa will be removed ina few days. The pro- peller St. Magnus is new loaded with her second carge of potatoes, ameunting to 3,030 bags, whieh she takea to Charlotte, N. Y., for the Rochester market. If farmers do not get their ideas teo high on prices there will probably be a very exten- sive business done during the next few weeks.

: The Drowning Acciaent at Tracadie.

Srr,—The former statement abort the acei- dent which happened oft Tracadie Harbor, on the 7th inst., was incerreet.,

The cerrect statement is as followa:—A beat owned by Thomas Larner, with Thomas Lar- ner, Joseph Lynn, and David Reud on board, on returning from the fishizg grounds, was struck by a school of blackfish, damaging the beat and causing her to sink almost immedi- ately. The three men kept themselves afloat by the refuse from the sinking boat; but be- fore assistance could reach them, David Reud was drowned, The others were rescued by Mr. Ready’s boat from the same harbor, with a crew of four men, namely, Allan Mc- Donald, master; James McDonald, his brother, Donald McAuley and Roverick McKinnon. Thomas Larner, ene 0 the survivors, and David Reud, who was irowned, were both natives of St. Mary’s District, County of Goysborough, Nova Sc tis. David Reud’s age is thirty-five years and two days. He leaves behind him a widow, residing a} Lower Montagne, This is a correct statement given me by two of the survivors.
