_.P.E.I. TERRY FOX RUN COORDINATR ISSUE CHALLENGE

The U.P.E.I. Terry Fox Run will be held on Sunday, September 15, beginning at 2:00 pm. All participants in he run are asked to be at the U.P.E.l. Barn by l:45»p.m.

Official starters for the Run will be Billy MacMillan, P.E.I. Youth Ambassador, and Dr. C.W..l. Eliot, Presi- . ent of U.P.E.I.

The event begins at the U.P.E.I. Barn and follows a route down to the Sherwood Road (past Towers), along the Mt. Edward Road to Belvedere Avenue, and then back to the U.P.E.I. Campus. Participants will then proceed once around the campus, ending their run at the U.P.E.I. Barn.

Terry Fox Run are issuing a challenge to all U.P.E.I. Athletic Teams, Clubs and Societies, Faculty, and Administration. The chal- lenge is to see who can re- ceive the greatest amount of participation and pledges within their group.

Terry Fox Humanitarian Award

Miles Turnbull, a U.P.E.l. Biology student, has been a recipient of the TFH Award for the past two years. He was recommended for the award by the Lester B. Pearson College in British Columbia.

To be eligible for the award students must be Canadian citizens studying towards a degree or diploma at a Canadian College or Univer- sity.

Selection will be based on a student’s demonstration of high ideals, humanitarian ser- vice while in pursuit of excel- lence of their academic, amateur sport, health, community service, and related endeavors.

The awards range from $2000 to $3000 annually.

The Wine and Cheese Reception for Part-Time and Older

than Average Full-Time students was very successful this year. Some students came in especially to attend the event while others came over after they had finished registering for classes. Those in attendance enjoyed meeting fellow students and faculty members. and were especially pleased when they met their fellow classmates or their professors. Social interaction is an. important part of the education process. This interaction not only helps create the feeling of belonging, but provides an op- portunity to meet and work with peers. MAPUS will be hosting other events. both social and academic. duringthe upcoming year. Watch the Netted am far further announcements. This year. for the first time, MAPUS had its own table at registration. Many students stopped by to chat, to make an in- quiry about courses, or to ask about the registration procedure. -

'Some concerns were expressed about evening courses being fil-

led before the part-time students had a chance to register. These concerns represent the “road block” for the part-time student who is trying to obtain a degree. Part-time students have a limited number ofcourses from which to choose in the evenings, and when they finally get to register after the full-time students have had their choice of courses, they find the courses they wanted or needed have been filled. Perhaps more spaces in each class could be designated for part-time students to help alleviate this problem.

MAPUS is concerned about problems Part-Time and Older than Average Full-Time students encounter while working towards their degrees. If we. at MAPUS, can help in any way, contact us through the Department of Extension or through the Student Union.

Student Services is offering a series of lectures designed to as- sist you in being successful academicall while at University. The series consists of six sessions from eptember 9 - 20. The sessions will be held twice daily in the Lecture Theatre of the Robertson Library and are free of charge. The times are: l2:.‘~0 - l:20. and 4:30 - 5:30, and cover such areas as: Mastering the Textbook and Reading Assignments, Studying for Tests and Exams. Time Management and Procrastination, Getting to Know Your Professor.
