In a notice of the death of Father Flan nery (Father Tum’) o£ Carna, Ireland, a corre:p ndeut of the Minchester Guardian writes:—‘‘I remember seeing him at the door of his ehureh in Carna when some | collection was being made for the Pope. | Not a soul was allowed to leave without be- ing personally scolded or praised by the priest. He was trans- lated out of himself to behold it: but being returned into himself, could not express it.” On referring to Dr. Murray's **Dictionary,” now in course of publication by the Clarendon Press, we find ample authority for thie use of the word, which sounds peculiar to modern ears. Amongst the quotations there ia one from Jeremy Taylor, who, in his ‘“(ireat Exemplar.” speaks of ‘‘s most elegant and persussive parable” Comber (‘Companion to the Temple’) refers to ‘the learned vol. umes of this elegant Father,” meaning St. Ch: ysostom.

Lecture at Kinkera

On Tuesday eveuing, Mr. James Me- Isaac, of the Herald, delivered his p»pular lecture on **S:r Thomas Move” before the League of the Cross, Kinkora. ‘To the dis- appointment of many who tal expressed themselves ‘‘beund to come,” the day proved to be ove of the unfavorable days of the season. Notwithstaading, a large sudience awaved the appearance of the leeturer, and by their rapt attention from } beginning to end, pronounced a most fayor- | able verdict on the merits of the paper. Rev J.J, McDonald, who introdaced the Jecturer and presided, arose as the latter had finished, aud expressed his re- grets that as the lecture was given in the church th@ usual afterpart had to be dis- pensed with. He expressed himself con- tident, however, that he would be readily privileged by the audience and particularly by the members of the League t) tender the lecturer thanks on their behalf, which he did accordingly.

The acknowledgement of the tender was accompanied by congratulations to the Leaguers for the laudable «fforts they were iunsking i. the great cause of temperance to wipe out the opposite vice, and in forcible words an appeal was made to ali to en- courage the workers in that uuble cause.
