PASSED AWAY AT BEDFOBD, N. S.—Mr. John Reid, formerly of Charlottetown died at his home in .Bedford, N. S., on Wednesday, March 9th. after a brief illness. He had beén gardener at the Queen here for many years. Mr. Reid was a veteran of both World Wars, serving his coun- try for five years during the first war and again in the secon war ‘until he received his discharge for medical reasons. The funeral will be held from Halifax Funeral Home on Friday. March 11th.

As l. result of the interest\hown last year in the series of talks en- titled ‘The Churm and the Arts." Frances Johnston. director of the Art Centre has announced that another series is to .be vresented within the next few weeks.

‘me programs are plsnned- for Thursday evenings. March 24th and 31st. and wil take the form of fi1m-_ evenings. As well as brief commentaries on the film. record- ed selections oi’ church music will be played.

Among the films to be shown are m. which illustrate the mak- ing of a stained glass window and tapestries. Others show some oi England's famous churches.

Announce Details Of Newfoundland i Confederation Stomp

Details are now given by the Canada Post Office of the special d-ccnt stanrp. which Hon. Ernest Bertrand, K.C., M.P., Postntastet- General hasmnnounced will be is- sued on April 1 to mark the entry of Newfoundland into Canadian Confederation.

The stamp will boar a. reproduct- ion of the famous ship “Matthew the ﬁll-ton vessel in which John Cabot sailed from Bristol. Eng- land, in 1497, when he sighted the “New Bound Land“. which he clalmrd for his Sovereign King Henry VII.

The design on the stamp shows a mediaevol ship under sail with one St. Georges’ cross flying at the main. In the left. foreground is shtmm a forested headland-the Newfoundland Coast. _

The commemorative stamp will measure approximately 1 1-2 by 1 in. or the size of the current Can- adian pictorial mue which com- memorates the ccnnvpletion of 100 years of RXISqJOIISiDIC Government. The colour will be green.

Plans have been made to have the new st-snnp placed on sale at all principal Canadian Post Offices, including Newfoundland on April 1. The first day covers for philaielisis will be handlcd by the Postmaster. St. Johns‘, Newfoundland. Collectors of first day covers will be required to pay ascrvice charge of 5 cents for each cover to be returned by ordinary mail. and 1O cents for each cover to be returned by Registered or Air Mail. ‘These service charges are in addition to the postage the collector wishes affixed to the cov- O1‘ registration. The stamps will be on sale by mail order through the Philatelic Section of the Post Of- fice Department on and alter April 1. .
