Athletic Sports At Regina.
A correspondent at Regina, N. W. T., writes August 6:
‘Saturday was a gala dey with the North West Mounted Police. It was their field day and the best for many years. The weather was excellent for a day of sport, and all the boys were in gocd condition. Every athletic avent was weil filled and largely competed for,
The day’s sport commenced at nine o’clock a. m. apd continued until 7.30 p.m. The grounds were a very pleasing scene: the handsome uniform of the officers and men with their wives and lady friends; the citizens io their best attire; with here and there the fantastic dress of the raochman or cowboy.
The Island boys bave upheld the repu- tation gained by the football match here last «pring.
A. McMillan woo first in the high jump, second in the hop-step and jump end third in long jump.
D. J. McCartoy won first in the quarter- mile. J, Owen and Louis Large won second in the wheelbarrow race. J. Owen was also second in throwing the hammer,
The most interesting event of the day was the tug-of-war. Four teams com- peted tor first prize of $18.00, which was won by a P.E, Isiand team. The follow- ing composed the team :—D J McCarthy, Capt.; Watts, Bernard, Pickering, Mc- Pherson, J. D., McMillan, Rogere, Baker.
One ot the teams had held the Jcham- pionship fOr years. ‘They were mosily non-commissioned officers very heavy team, but the lsimud boys “ere too quick for them.
In the eveniag prizes were distributed inthe Concert Hall by Mrs Mclilree, wife of the Asseistant Commissioner. Song and music enlivened the boys, and they were soon swept into the “‘madding whirl of the dizzy dance.” This brought to a close a very pl«asant day;and the boys feel very grateful tothe officers for the interest they have shown for the amusement.

THE PISH REFUSE NUISANCE.
Sin,—Notwithstanding warnings io some Of our local papers in the matter of casting refuse fish on some of the public roads leading from Charlottetown, I no- tice that the nuisance still remains unabat- ed. In travellirg along the St. Peter’s Road ons is met,even within a few hund- dred yards from the City, by the stench of decaying matter, and soon, right in the middie of the road, looms up in full sight heads tails and sometimes whole bodies of cod dumped from the waggons of passing fishermen. I have noticed this repeated ly, both this summer and proceeding ones, ov the St. Peter’s Road and other roads leading to the fishing stations,
W hat a Btate of affairs to meet the citi~- zZ2n8 going On a pleasure drive through the country orthe farmi.g class coming into market, to eay nothing of the tourists who #0 much enjoy the quite healthful (7) drive along our otherwise pleasant high~ ways! Surely this is a matier for the Royalty and country boards of health to move in ; or have they become 80 inert in the discharge of their public duties as to turn deaf ears to the oft repeated appeals of the wayfaring public?
If nothing is done immediately in the matter I would suggest that the proper officers in Charlottetown look prumptiy inio the matter and see that these officials perform theirduty by meting out sam mary treatment to the transgressors, re~ gardlese of who they may be.

You will find for several miles outthrough the Royalty from the city, dotted here and there, ,heaps of fish heads and offal reeking with flies and rotting io the sua, throwing off an aroma that is not calculated to make men or women sing psalms. Surely it is not necessary to cast reflection on hardworking) fisherman, who, perhaps, have by habit forgotten that the nasa! organ in those whe do not fish is more sensitive than theirs; but I wouid ratherca/l the attention of the Board of Health to a matter that must certainly come withiu thei> duties.

PainruL Acowwent.—Tbe Pioneer re- ports a paloful and very serious accident whieh happened a few days ago to Mr. G. W. Thompson, cf Darnley. He was un- loading bay into his barn, when the trip rope of the hay carrier broke and he fell to the ground, a distance of about tea feet, receiving severe injuries. It will be severai weeks before he is again able to work.
Coa. PrRices.—-Owing to the unprece-~ dented demand for coal and to the dearth of sufficient coal cutters, the G.M. A. have raised the price of coal Slack coal is selling at $2.25 per ton, while a year ago the same quantity and quality sold for 80 cents, The colleries are fioding great difficulty in filling their contracts and at the present time have more ordera than can hope to fill.—North Sydoey Herald.
DeatH From Broken Anm.—Last week, Miss Coles, daughter of Mr. William Coles, of French River, cied as the result of a ead accident. About a week previ- ously she fell from a load of hay aud broke ber arm. The limb was set, but in a few days blood poisoning set in. Three doctors were called in, and it was decided that amputation was necessary. The pr tient was, however, uvable to stand the shock and died a few hours after the operation. She leaves a father and two sisters to mourn, to wbom we extend our eincere sympathy in their affliction.
None on toe Istaxsp.—Dr. Pethick, V.S., of Bedeque, has returned home trom his tour of Pictou County, N. S., to investigate,at the request of the Dominion Couwissioner of Live Stock, a cattle di- cease which has been prevalent there for many years. Dr, Pethick was accom-~ panied by Mr. R. Robe-teon, of the Mari~ time Kxperimental Farm, avd Dr. Town- send, aud a large number of post mortem examinations were held of cattle which died of the disease as well asthe gathering of all information possible from the moss intelligent stock owners of the district. The disease hes been prevalent for forty years, and is kaown only as the “ Pictou County Cattle Disease.” Is is said that in the county about 300 cattle die of it every year, A report of the investigation will be published in due course. Many of the tarmere questioned attributed the dieease to the ragwort,a weed which is very common in the locality. Dr. Pethick is of the opiniow that this weed does not ex- ist on P. E.
