There are many Americans who know that all Canada is not affheted with smallpox, but there are some who are ofa contrary belief. Thebaw Alarmed.

King Thebaw, of Barmah, becomiog alarmed attherapid approach of the British expeditionary force under Gen. Prendergast, notwithstanding the resist- ance offered by the Burmese, has sent a messenger to Gen. Pendergast, begg- ing him to grant an armistice tor the purpose of peaceably settling the diffi- culty between Burmah and the Indian Goverument. Gen. Pesdergrast, in re- ply, demanded the surrender of the Bar- mese Army and Mandalay, the capital, stating that only then could he enter- tain any request. King Tuebaw therc- upon surrendered the Aven forts with 28 guns to be turned over to the British. A garrison wis placed there and the British proceeded to Mandalay on the 28th ult.

Affairs at Calgary.

Mr. Murdock, the Mayor of Calgary, lott Winnipeg for Ottawa last Saturday. The purpose of bis visit to the capital is stated by the Calgary Herald to be “to lay before the Minirter of Justice the state of things judical in the district. As, for instance, that justices of the peace refuse to commit, and juries to convict, owing toa growing disbelief in the proportionateness in Calgary of punishment to offence.” The removal of Judge Travis is said to be asother object of his mission. “At present the Officers of the mounted police are ex- (ffivio justices of the peace, and, con- sequently their power clashes with that of the municipal authorities. The Mayor thinks the police should be re- iieved ot their power as magistrates, as the townis quite capable of running its own show.”
