Michae! Carey,a St. Louis car-driver, was stabbed in the head with a pocket- knife in 1857 and the blade broke off near the handie and remained unnoticed ia the wound, which soon healed. Oc- ¢asionally Carey suffered from neuraivic pains in the head, and about three} weeks ago he noticed that when he raised his right arm he would feel a severe pain, which daily increased in intensity. He finally consulted a physician, whe upon examination found a sharp-pvinted bit ef metal protruding through the skin near the collar bone. Carey had forgetten abent the stabbing of twenty-three years Lefore, but when a knife-blade about four inches long was removed trom his body he recalled the circumstance.

The Brewers’ association of the Unit- ed States represents $350,000,009 capi- tal, and its members annually pay the government $11,000,000. Thirty-five million pounds ef hops and 35,000,000 bushels of barley were used last year by 2,719 brewers of the United States. The number of breweries in Germany have decreased nearly 3,000 from 1872 to 1879. The total anoual German

reduction of beer averages 2,270 gal- ons for vach man, woman and ehild. The English, last year, consumed 884 gallons per head of population, the Americans (U.38.), 500 gallons, the Rus- sians but 80 gallons. The world’s an- nual preduction of beer, including 18 countries, is estimated te be 3,000,000 gallons in Europe and 4,000,000 gallons in the United States.

A thriving Beet Sugar factory is at work in Maine, another in Delaware, two in California, one is proposed to be built at Oswego, N. Y., and three are projected in Quebec. The State of Delaware otfers $5,- 000 in premiums for the best crop of sugar

beets for the encouragement of the culture, and in one year the Agricultural Depart- ment distributed 4,764 quartz of sugar beet seed. ‘The general inierest taken in this subject aay be destined to result in a vast benefit to agriculture. It is known that sugar can be profitably made from beets ; it 1s known that beets can be grown; all that seeias to be needed, says an exchange, is to bring farmers and manufacturers in practical business relations with each other.
