diate future: Increasing Subsidies on School Books

Increasing teachers: grants to s¢hool districts will enable local boards to retain highly qualified téachers.

Assistance for University Education The Government, not parents, must try to shoulder-an increasing share of-the-high:costs of university education. Beginning this fall, the Shaw Government will pay a grant to St. Dunstan’s and Prince of Wales equal to $300 for each university student. In addition, a development grant of $125,000—will go to Prince of Wales. Increase Equalization. Grants Equalization Grants to regional, consolidated and elementary school districts were $35,000 °* in- 1959. This new program is only possible because P.E.I. has made so much basic progress in the past. seven years under the capable lead- ership of the Conservative Government.

_ This basic progress has already brought substantial benefits to the economy. The .further.development.of.our-tesources, and~ of the industrial economy, will provide the expansionary @limate and the financial means -

to support our new services to people. Moreover, the Shaw Government has proven to investors, to other levels of government, and to our own people, that it is a govern- ment of good management. For example: The surplus on ordinary account for the last fiscal year-was over $1'4 million;
