The MAPUS Connection

For Mature and Part-time Students

Help is on the way! For those students who still tackle doing their own income tax returns (and those who may want to), Mapus is inviting rep- resentatives from Revenue Canada to discuss the kinds of tax deductions students are allowed to claim for 1998. Two sessions will be scheduled for the first week of March. Both information ses- sions will be open toall U.P.E.L. students, and not limited to mature and part- time students only. Dates and times will be available shortly.

Also, if any student is interested in participating in the “Income Tax as a Volun- teer” program, please leave your name and contact number on the board in the Mapus Lounge. (Robertson Library 06) This is the program where volunteers assist seniors and low-income families with their income tax return. Revenue Canada provides the training and the information you learn can be quite beneficial for fill- ing out your own return.

These positionsare open for any mature and part-time student who may be interested. Please let us know your inten- tions before the end of Febru- ary, ifpossible. Also, you may have some suggestions about topics that might be of interest for the annual meeting. We'd love to hear them.

On a different note, ap- P ications forscholarships and

ursaries are available from the Registrar’s office. If you want to know if you are eligi- ble, the guidelines are posted onthe bulletin board in the hallway. The dead- line is February 12, 1999.

At the same time, the Mapus executive are in the midst of designing a criteria for awarding an annual Mapus scholarship. What would you like to see? Remember, Mapus includes all mature students over the age of 24 andall part-time students. This diversity in itself makes creat- ing guidelines interesting. Right now, there is approximately $1,000. available in the fund.

Fundraising to increase the amount of the scholarship fund is also high on the agenda. One opportunity that Mapus has is for students interested in subscribing to the Guardian as a new home subscriber. Right now, the sete is offering a “Mortgage Free for a Year” contest to home subscribers. Second prize is a$3,000. home furniture package and third prize is 12 months of free cable TV. If you would like to take advantage of the offer, please contact me for more details. The commission earned from these sales will be do- nated to Mapus. A notice will also beposted in the Lounge explaining the details.

lege. Now | ask you: Is that the sorriest indictment of the American educational system i ever heard? (pauses to ight acigarette) No aptitude at all for long division, but never mind. It’s him they ask to split the atom. How he talked his way into the Nobel prize is beyond me. But then, I su pose it’s like the man says, It s not what you know ....

And finally, | found this “Rules for Staff” from the year 1878. See you next week!

1.Godliness, cleanliness and punctuality are the neces- sities of good business.

2. This firm has reduced the hours of work, and the clerical staff will only have to be present between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. on week- days.

3. Daily prayers will be held each morning in the main office. The clerical staff will be present.

4. Clothing must be ofa sober nature. The clerical staff will not disport themselves in raiment of bright colours, nor will they wear hose, unless in good repair. Overshoes and topcoats may not be worn in the office, but neck scarves and headwear may be worn in inclement weather.

5. A stove is provided for the benefit of clerical staff. Coal and wood must be kept in the locker. It is recommended that each member of the clerical staff bring four pounds of coal each day during the cold weather.

6. No member of the clerical staff may leave the room without permission from Mr. Rogers. The calls of na- ture are permitted and clerical staff may use the garden be- low the second gate. This area must be kept in good order.

7.No talking is allowed during business hours.
