The Discovery of America IT WAS AFTER BITTER DISAPPOINTMENT THAT
COLUMBUS FOUND LAND. Columbus, whose keen eye saw signs of rising mutiny, took steps to meet it. The men who were timid he encouraged with kind words. To the avaricious he spoke of the great wealth they would find in the new countries. Those who were openly rebellious he threatened with the severest punishment. Thus, by maneging the men with tact, he kept them at their posta of duty till September 25, when, from certain favorable signs, every one grew hopeful that land was near. The sea was now calm, and, as the ships sailed close to- gether, wafted westward by gentle breezes. Martin Pinzon, who commanded the Pinta, cried out, ‘* Land, land!” and forthwith began to chant the ‘‘ Gloria in Excelsis.” But he had been deceived by a ridge of low-lying cloud. For a week following, from many favorable indications, all on board were confident that as each day drew to a close land would be discovered on the next—and with each morning cime bitter disappointment. This state of feeling con- tinued till October 7, when, as the Nina. the smallest of the vessels, was breasting the waves ahead of others, she suddenly hoisted a fisg and, as a signal that land had been sighted, fired a gun, the first ever

The lumber trade is prosperous. Orders from outside cannot be filled. Men want- ing to make contracts with the mill owners direct find they cannot. The output of the year as far as the mil] owners is concerned is sold.
The maj rity of the lumber contracts are made early in the year before the thaw, and include the bu'k of the cut. This year not only bas this been done, but the class of buyers known as middlemen has been ex- cessively busy, and speculated in whatever the Chaudiere men may have unsold after those contracts were made.
This not only applies to Ottawa, but to the mills in the surrounding districts. About 10 o'clock Columbus saw a light in the distance which meved to and fro in the darkness; and, shortly after midnight a sailor on the Pinta made the welcome announcement that land could be seen, The ships now took in sail and waited for the morning. As the 12th of October dawned, and the light of the rising sun dispelled the soft morning mists, Columbus’ patience and unflagging zeal had their reward. He could plainly see land; and he tells us it looked “‘lika a garden full of trees.” It was an island belonging to what is now the Bahama group.—[July St. Nicholas.

—_————_—o —— The Homestead Lockeut. Christ Evans, secretary of the American Federation of Laber, arrived at Pittsburg from New York on the 12th inst. The ob- ject of Mr, Evans’ visit is to give the situa- tion of affairs at Homestead a very careful inspection in his official capacity as an exe- cutive officer of the federation. He will report to the Executive Council of the American Federation of Labor. The troops have taken possession of the Homestead works and everything is quiet. The Homestead expedition of the militia ia an expensive undertaking and will cost the State a goud round sum of money. The National Guard of Pennsylvania consists of 8,470 members, of which fully 8,000 have responded to the Governor's call. Of these 600 are commissioned officers. 1t will cost the State about $22,000 a day until the troops are recalled.
Homesteap, Pa., July 12.—The idea of the locked out men that they still have a voice in the management of this town was shown this morning when Capt. Hunt, of Battery B, was unloading his guns from a flat car opposite Homestead station. A crowd watched the proceedings with great distrust and suspicion and then appointed a grievance committee of three to order Capt. Hunt to desist. They went to him and said: ‘‘See here, you haven’t any right to unload that cannon here. This is a peace- ful town. You had better quit right now. There are a lot of hot-headed people around here, and we won't answer for the conse- quences if you try to land that gun.”
The captain took no notice of the inter- ruption and the committee went away. They had arvther consultation with their principals and returned again. Seeing that they couldn’t scare the battery, they left for good.
Another crowd of strikers objected to General Gobin, of the Third Brigade, tak- ing possession of an empty house in Car- negie row for his headquarters. General Gobin’s brigade flag is planted in the front garden. The committee marched up to Colonel Green, Provost Marshal, who is located near the house, and demanded to know about it.
** We want some information about that flag they've stuck there,” they said. *‘The owner of that house is out of town, and we We want to go through the lines and see about it.” The men were some of the brilliant spe- cial officers, with tin badges, sworn in by the Burgess. Colonel Green told them they could all go through the lines if they liked, and laughed heartily at them, as they had really been trying to find out if the military were going to sneer at their badges so as to get up a new grievance. Chey soon saw there wasn't anything in their strategy and they d it is needless to say that General Gobin occu- pies the premises with the full consent of the owner.
The refusal of General Snowder to con- sent to the reception and brass band busi- ness has infuriated some of the men. They want recognition of some kind, and they don’t like to see themselves reduced from the high office of dictators to that of plain citizens without so much asa fiager within gunshot of the pie.

Curious Facts. A stream near Tucson, Arizona, petrifies all soft substances thrown into it. It is in the great Colorada potato beetle belt, and at the time of their migrations thousands of thern strike the water and are converted into solid stone. At the laying of the corner-stone of a small syo ue for Russian Jews in Whitechapel, London, by Lord Rothschild, on Her Majesty's birthday, the most striking feature was the hearty singing by the entire congregation, of “God Save the Queen” in Hebrew. A boy fourteen years old, who lives near Waycross, Ga., is said to greatly resemble an alligator. Scales of a delicate texture can be seen all over his body, He has a fiat head, a long wide mouth and eyes like an alligator. His legs and arms are flat and crooked at the joints. He can neither talk nor walk, but bellows and crawls like reptile. In the reign of Richard IL, 1390, the dandies of London wore shoes with toes from one foot to eighteen inches in length, with the point or “horn” turned up and fastened to the garter by a gold or silver chain.
