U.P.E.I. field house - the centre of the action this weekend

THIS WEEKEND COULD BE CONSIDERED “UNB weekend” at the UPEI Sports Centre. Both the mens’ and womens’ basketball teams as well as our volleyball team all host the UNB Reds this Saturday and Sunday. All games will be very important in the race for playoff spots. The Fredericton school will bring a couple of very strong teams and one weaker one to Prince Edward Island for this weekend's action. In volleyball, UNB hasa perfect 13-0 record in matches, as well as a 39-3 record in games, easily good enough to lead the nine-team women’s volleyball league. UNB has a ten point lead over the second-place St. Mary's Huskies and a twenty point lead over the Panthers. The Panthers currently hold seventh place, with six points.

In women’s basketball, UNB is also the team to beat; they lead the women’s basketball league with 32 points in thirteen games. This weekend, the Reds will match their 12-1 record

against UPEI's 3-9 record. The Lady Panthers, last year’s league champions, find themselves in desperate need of a win as their season begins to wind down.

Men's basketball is the only AUAA sport in which UNB's not among the elite. After a Promising 2-0 start, the Fredericton school has since stumbled their way to a 4-7 record, good for sixth place in the extremely competitive AUAA mens’ basketball league. The Panthers, who lost their national ranking with tough losses on January 29th and 30th, are in third place with a 6-4 record.

This league is without a doubt the toughest league in Canada. Virtually every team in the league, perhaps with last-place Memorial as the exception, can beat any of the other teams

on any given night. This makes this weekend's |

games very important for the Panther’s as they battle for a playoff spot, something they missed last year.
