Then my mother sent me a lawyer's letter say— ing it I did not supporther she would have the insurance transferred. I asked my wife about it, and she advised me to drop it, and I did.

“Another time he cam and asked how much I would take for it. I said a thou- sand dollars. He said he would see. After that he came and wanted me to lend him $10, saying he had not any money for ex- penses. I said I hadn’t it with me, but would send it tohim by mail, thinking he needed some to get through the sale of the policy I thought he was working on. I sent him $10 and don’t know whether he got it or not, I never asked him. Some time after he asked for another $10, and I borrowed that for him from Mr. Hilburn. On Wednesday of the ﬁrst week of the exhibition he come to me and said my mother was going to Tomato on Tuesday and he wanted me to go to the station and see her 03. »I told him I could not be- cause I had to work. I don’t know whether she went or not. Last Thursday he came to me and said he had a lawyer’s letter from a man he was dealing with in Toronto, who stated ithe did not get some more money, he would put it in his law- yer’s hands. I told him he would get no more moneyvfrom me, and he went away." The prisoner denied having made any agreement to support his moi-her in con- sideration of policy.

Rose did no’, ills said, make 'volnntery statement to the Toronto authorities, but it was thought his talkativeness here that the affair leaked out, and was brougt to the attention of the authorities. It' ap- pears that Rose told the plot to a lawyer named Bond, who regauled the whole thing as so preposterous, he thought it was a. joke or that Rose was crazy. But. Bond’s client, who had in- trod uced Rose, name next. Bond had been talking to him. He and Bond thought that whether it vans a joke or not, in the public interest the matter should be laid before the magistrate. They submitted the facts to Magistrate John Nettleton, and Chief of Police ‘Maiden investigated the matter and concluded there was nothing in it. Bond's client, who is a shareholder in the Continental Life Insurance Company,

by him that Rose was plain. ,. In an interview the prisoner‘s mother stated positively that when the insurance on her life was taken out her son agreed to support her, and had not given her one dollar. She said her second husband, prisoner’s stepfather, had died fonr years ago. He was working for his stepson at the time. She found out afterwards that prisoner had insured his stepfather’s life for 82,000. When she spoke to him about it he had promised to give her $200 when he got it, but he had not given her anything. About her Toronto trip, she said Rose had given her $2.50 to pay her fare. He met hunt the Union station, Toronto, and took her to his niece, he said. He took her up a narrow stair to her room without introducing hor to any one, and after too. she saw nothing of him. lent morning she wenttovisit a friend, Hrs. Levy. on‘Edward Street, and alter a week returned home without see- ing Rose. ' Brown's wife denies any knowledge of the aifair, and testiﬁes to his good
