The hit: Eastern Kingis show was attended by His Honor Lieu- tenant Governor '1'. W. 1.. Prowsc whu opened the show. He was iii- iroduced by Hon. J. The seventeen employees of Ain- erican Can Company's Charlotte- town Factory were told yesterday by Mr. P. G. Rigby that the plant will cease operations permanent- ly on oi' about December 1. 1952.

For many years he was engaged in the lobster canning and shipp- ing industry.

Klr. Longworth was I. director of the Eastern Trust Company and held the office of vice-president. of the Canadian Chamber of Com- inerce.

Approximately 90 miles of high- ways in this Province have been standardized by widening, sub- grading and preparing for grave!- ling, Hon. Dougald MnCKiiilion, Minister of Public Works and High- ways, said yesterday.

Some of the gravelling has al- ready been done, he stated, and the work has been fairly divided between the three counties with about 30 miles of roads having been done in each. This work is separate from that being done on Island roads in connection with the Trans- Cnnada Highway.

The marketing of beans at. the Aylmer plant. in Middleton, N. 5.. is an increasing industry throughout the southern King's area as many farmers are now planting several acres specifically destined to this market. The price paid the farmer is four cents per pound or 580.00 per ton. which is said to yield i fair profit on the acreage product- ion.

Green bean is the primary pro- duct cultivated. but there is also a. relatively large portion of wax beans marketed. It would . seem however, that the green bean is the more popular among farmers as approximately eight out of ten tons at the transportation stat- ion are of the green variety.

Q.C.. return- ed home in Summeraide on Mon- day evening after a business trip to the Pacific Coast where he was the sole representative of Prince Edward Island at the conference of commissioners on uniform legis- lation for Canada, which was held at Victoria. Vancouver Island dur- ing the week of August 25th. The purpose of this conference was to draft uniform legislation for adopt- ion by the various provinces.

Plans to build it new community centre at Murray River were formulated at a special meeting held at the Murray River School last evening. The meeting was at- tended by a large number of in- tcrested residents of the commuti- ity who discussed the plans at, considerable length with excellent results forthcoming.

A charge of arson against Wal- lace Palmer. Borden, was dismissed yesterday by Magistrate R.S. Hin- ton. Q.C., at the conclusion of a preliminary hearing that continued for five days during which a total of 32 witnesses were called. The charge was laid as I result of a tire on April 14th at Borden Theatre, owned and operated by Mr. Palmer. Magistrate Hinton, in reviewing the evidence. said all the circum- stances did bristle with suspicion. and that there had been no ex- planation of how or why the fire started. He said while there was lots of circumstantial evidence, it would ;l'8Qllll'C more than that. He pointed out several important factors in the evidence which were in favour of the accused. He said there was yno direct evidence so strong as to ,(X)l”iVlilCe him the accused should be committed, and he therefore -uas obliged to dismiss the charge. James Mncllachern was the P. E.
