Scott Act AND TemperaNce.—The Rev. Father Rougier, Parish Priest of Renfrew, in referring to the Scott Act on Sunday week said ; ‘* The Scott Act is -repealed, and there is indeed no oceasion to shed tears. Gen. Middleton.

Boston, June 3.

Lieut. Gen. Sir Frederick Middleton, Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian forces, and Lady Middleton, are stopping at the Adams House. They dined there last evening. In the afternoon they return- ed from a day's drive about the surburbs, They attended the Country Club races in the forenoon which they enjoyed excced-

ingly. Said Gen. Middleton: ‘I came es- pecially with my regiment to take command during the Indian rising trouble, and shal] not remain in Canada much longer, as we intend returning to England shortly. My wife is very foad of England, although she is French-Canadian, and myself about half Canadian already.”

Three Men Drowned.

MacKay's Station, Ont., June 3.

Six men in the employ of Pierce & Co., Ottawa, attempted to run the rapids on the Petewawa River against the orders of their foreman. The boat swung around in the current and upset, drowning Cleaphas Theoret, of Point Claire, Hyacinthe N, Cal- lett and Dennis Beaudry. The bodies had not been discovered when the messenger left the place of the accident,

The Vacancy in the Senate.

Orrawa, June 3.

A popular agitation has been started to have the vacancy in the Senate, caused by the death of Senator Ferrier, filled by the appointment of Richard White, of the Montreal Gazette, brother of thé late Minis- ter of the Interior. The Government has not yet, however, considered the matter.

Wiater Steamer.

Orrawa, June 3.

The Marine Department have adopted the suggestion recently made by Capt. Mc- Elhinney, in reference to securing a steel steamer of the Swedish model to replace the Northern Light, and the Captain has been instructed to ask tenders of Glasgow builders, with a view to the immediate con- structioh of ‘such’a steamer.

Another Newspaper Burnt Out.

The offices of the Call newspaper were completely destroyed by fire about one o'clock this morning, together with plant and all contents, only some private papers being saved. The loss is about $40,000.

BE It ENACTED by the City Council of the City of Charlottetown as follows :—

Section Five of the By-Law of the said City, Chapter Nine, intituled ** A ‘By-Law Relating to Dryunkennéss,” is hereby amended by atriking out ihe word “Thirty” in the seventh line thereof and inserting in lieu thereof the word Ninety,” and by striking out the words ‘Thirty Days” in the last line thereof but one and insert- ing in licu thereof the words ** Ninety Days, with or without hard labor,”

A By-Law Relating to Pigs and Slaughter Houses,

BE IT ENACTED by the City Council of the City of Charlottetown as foliows :—

1. From and after the first day of June, in the year of Our Lora one thousand eight hundred and eighty-eight. uacil the first day of Uctober, in the said year, no Pigs or Swine shall be kept within the limits of the Ci y of Charlottetown ; and inevery succeeding year no Pigs or Swine shall be kept within the limits of the said Cit from the first day of May until the first day of October in each year ; ,

Provided always that Pigs az Swine may be broupht anio the said Urry for the purpose of pub- hic exhibition, or for transit, shipmeut or saie, if they are not kept therein longer than five days.

_2. For every Pig kept in the said City in viola- tion of the foreguing section the owner or keeper thereof shail forfeit and pay a sum not exceeding Five Doliars for the tirst offence, and a further sum not exceeding Five Dollars for every subse- quent offence.

3. From and after the first day of January, in thre year of Our Lord one thousand eighs nyn- dred and eighty-nine, no ergction, building or place within the City of Charlottetqwn shail be used as a Slaughter House, or for the purpose of slaughtering animals therein ;

Provided that the Bourd of Health may, if they see fit, yrunta license toany person or persons to slaughier cattle within the limits of the said City, between the first day of December and the first day of April in each year, upon such terms and conditions and subject to such restrictions and regulations as may be impused by the seid Board of Health,

Any person or persons establishing, conducting or continuing any Slaughier House, or using any plare for slaughtering anim+ls within the said City, after the foregoing date, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding Thirty ULoliars for every day he or they shall cantinue such nuisance, or use any such place in yiolationof the preceding section,

4. It shall be the duty of the Police Officers of the said City, and they are hereby required to enforce observance of the provisiuns of this By- Law ; ad ail penalties hereinbefore provided for shall be recoverable with costs inthe City Court of the Stipendiary Magistrate, onthe oath or affirmation of any cred'bie witness; and in de- fauit of payment of any such penalty it shail and may be la wrul for the said Magistrate to commit the offender or offenders to the Comman Jail of = said City for any period not exceeding thirty

Among the new colors now being shown, browns and fawns promise to take the lead. Grey, putty, clove and most lovely fawn tints are all in excellent taste. Stripes and plain materials will reign supreme in the new shades. j

Judging from the immense variety of lovely Washing Goods shown, this is to be a ‘* Cotton Season” in earnest. Zephyrs are particularly pretty and useful, Light Blues, Pinks and Greys being favorites. Jerseys, smocked, gathered or even finely pleated in the upper parts, are exceedingly fashionable, and it is a very pret'v style.

Small Bonnets. and large : Hats are undoubtedly leading styles in headwear—fayorite \ shapes being La Tosca, * Hollywood and Fairmont. Flowers will be, and in fact are, in very general use. They are so perfectly imitated, and have such charming possibilities, that all the leading Milliners hail them with delight. The variety of new Ribbons shown is ‘unprecedented, whilst Laces, Tulles, &c., are also used largely for trimmings. The variety in Millinery Trimmings and Headwear is so large that we recommend all who want a more thorough knowledge of them to call at BEER BROS.,—the largest importers of these goods on the Island—-where they will see all the styles we mention and a great many more. Indeed, everyone can be suited this season—the variety of shapes shown is so great and the styles so pretty. Lace edging to Bon- nets is extremely fashionable.
