Casvattigs —Thomas Shovlin, who, with John Martin, escaped from the St. John Penitentiary, was shot and fatally wounded by Chief Keeper Keefe, about four miles from that institution. A man named Burnside fell dead at his residence, Marsh Bridge, St. John, yesterday. Michael L2onard, who was injured by a bull the other day at Musquash, N. B., has died from his wounds.

Business Prospecrs 1n Great Britain. — The London Times now takes a very gloom) view of the immediate business future. The crops are poor, the potato crop es- pecially was almost a total failure—the rot was not so bad for many years—and busi- ne3s generally is most oppressed. It was hoped early in the ‘year that the turning point had been reached, but this hope is ao longer entertained and the /imes fears that the country must pass through more severe trials before an improvement will! take place.

Our Charlottetown despatch informs us that Rev, Geo. M. Grant has signified his acceptance of the Principalship of Queen’s College, Kingston, Oniario, to which posix tion he has been elected. The reverend gentieman will be greatly missed, not only by the c ngregation of St. Matthew’s, over which he has so long and ably presided as pastor, but by the citizens af Halifax gen- erally, whose good opinions he has won, for though many of us had occasion to differ from him at times, none wiil deny that he has been a most energetic and use- ful citizen, foremost in every good work. Especially will he be missed by our benevo~ lent institutions, in nearly all of which he has long been a most indefatigable work- er; his e'oquent appeals have brought money to their treasuries, and his untiring efforts have materially contributed to their successful management. St. Matthews congregation will find it hard to fill his piace, Dalhousie © llege will jose m him one of its most influeniial friends, and every work of the Presbyterian Church in the Lower Provinces will be a loser through his departure. Nova Scotia, and especially Pictou County, may justly feel honored by tie chuice of one of her sons to fillso important and responsible a position as that of the head of Queen’s Couilege. The whole commuuaity, while regretting his remova! from a sphere of activity in which he has proved him eif eminently useful and successfu!, will heartily wish him God speed ia the new field of labor to which he 1s cailed, and for the discharge of the duties of which he possesses specia! qualifications. — Ha.
