Concert at Wheatley River

The mewbers of Wheatley River Liter- a:y aud Debating Club heid their aonus! entertainment onthe evening of the 5th inst., and added another to their list of successes. When ahout 8 o’clock the cbairman, Albert McKay, E:q, announced be opening number of the programme (b+ ha!l was crowded from door to footlights, presenting a sea of faces smiling, eager and expectant.

The programme was all that could be desired, with variety enough to please the most festidious. The masical oumbers especially were choi¢e and pleasing. Miss Louise M. Smith, whose name is always astociated with good music, performed the duties of organist. Miss Aunie McDonald and Miss Belle Matheson contributed solos of more than average worth. Mr. Jacob Smith sang several comic songs, iucluding “Ive only been down to the Club,” “McSorley’s Twine,” and “High Water Pants,” as only Mr. Smith can, ‘he duet,“*Murmuriog Sea,” was & treat to ail lovers of classical music. Miss Aanie Cruwys rich contralto blending in sweet barmony with Miss L, M Smith’s fauliess foprano they were warmly applauded. Miss Louisa M Smith’s eclo,“‘In the Shadow of the Pines,” was the star number. Sbe received a well~merited encore, and in response sang “My Hearts o’erthe Water.” The literary psit of the programme was el-o up to the usual standard of excellence. Tbe recitations by Messrs N. Campbell ao! T.D. Ling were given in professional! atvie. The young Misses Stead and Me- Donald also presented theirs very cleverly. Mesers T. D, Ling, Jobn Steveneon and Nurman Ling presented the uproariors! fuany farce, “Never Mind de Why aod Wharfor.” It was a scream trom start to finieb, “Too Greedy by Half” came in for a fair share of applause, Dr. Stevenson handling the forceps with all the skill of deatist. “*The Unwilling Wicnese” re- ceived ample justice, Mes.rs Geo Matheson and Norman Lingplaying like profession-~ ale. Mrs. T D Ling, Mre. A McKay, Mise Javie Stevenson and Miss Lidia Stead, produced the tbriiling comedietta, The Stolen Peaches, Mr John Stevenson play- ing the part of Azariab Green.

Hughe, E q., Greenvale, on the evening of March 3let, when a goodly number of ladics and gentlemen assembled for the parpcs: of spending & pleasant evening in the come pany of Mr. ana Mre. Hughes whe, we regret very much to learn, have decided to leave this part of the country and take up their residence at Brackley Point. Mr. Hughes has been a resident of thie place for about 16 years, when he came from Charlottetown and took up the profession of farming. During thie period he ha: suceeded In ingratiating himself in the hearts of the people, and be command: the respect and confidence of all who have had the pleascre of cultivating hie a quain- tance. Mr. Walter Oxenham, in a very neat and approjriate speech, presented Mre. Hughes with a purse the contents of which most conclusively convinced her ot the high esteem in which she is beld by the people. The thanks of the company © most cordially extended to Messrs Tom and Nelson Bell and John Kussell, who, in their usuai piessing manner, furnished the musical portion of the evening’s entertain- ment.
