A svaTeMeNT prepared by the Montreal Herald shows that there were interred in the Roman Catholic and Protestant cemeteries of Montreal, from August 29 to October 9, the bodies of 1,180 persons who had died from smallp x. Of these 100 were English speak- ing and 1,050 were French Canadians. Of the 100 English speaking, 48 were Protestants and 52 were Catholics,

The garrison here, numbering 2,000 men and 1,000 Macedonian volunteers, have started for the Servian frontier. Several divisions of the army assembled on Roumelian frontier have been ordered to fall back to resist the Servians,- who on Sunday advanced to Agor.

A desperate attempt was made this after- noon to assassinate Premier Estrupp, by a youth named Rosmussen, a compositor. Rosmussen fired two shots from a revolver at the Premier, but missed his mark. He was arrested.
Grits Crestfallen, Ortawa, Oct. 21.
The Grits here are all terribly crestfallen over the result of the election in St. John, following, as it did, so closely upon Anti- gonish. They account for it by saying that the people of the Maritime Provinces are easily bought up; that Bishop Cameron was paid for supporting Thompson, and that St John was bribed, The (rits here are so blind that they aver itis absurd to say their party has done anything since 1882 to warrant the overwhelming reverses they have experienced. They are very savage. Last night a number of Grits in Toronto held a meetirg to form a Pro- vincial Reform Club. Sir Richard Cart- wright, Premier Mowat and others address-
ed the meeting. The intention ef the Club the Grit organ says, is to combat extrava-_ gence and snobbery. The promoters hoped | to have a big time rejoicing over their vic- | tory in St. John, but they postponed the | rejoieing when the telegrams announcing | their overwhelming defeat wers sent up to the platform. In fact, they were a very sick crowd.

A despatch from Rangoon says that at a) meeting of his Generals in Mandalay K:ng | Theebaw declared that he would personally lead his army against the English. It is believed in Rangoon that the Indian Gov- ernment will decide to depose King Thee- baw whether he accedes to English demands or not. Further advices from Burmali say the Spans have risen against King Thebaw. They have burned a number of villages on the west bank of the Salmen River and have been attecking Thamnee. The Bur- mese fled on the approach of the Spans.

An Eagle's Victim. A CHILD CARRIED A MILE FROM ITs HOME AND KILLED.
On Saturday morning last, the wife of Jean Bapte Romilly, a farmer in St. Vincent de Paul, a village ten miles from Montreal, was feeding her fowls, while her child, aged about two years, was playing around. Suddenly a large bald-headed eagle swoopsd down avd bore the little one cff in its talons. The child screamed and ex- tended itsarms to its mother, who was beside herself with mental agony, but was powerless to render assistance. The screams of the child, however, attract the neighbors, who with shot guns pursue the eagles, The bird was seen to alight with its prey upon the roof of a barn a mile distant, and, lifting up its head, with one powerful stroke it drove its beak into the child’s head and then began its horrid feast. Atthe near approach of the neighbors, who were firing guns to frighten the eagle, it took flight, leaving the child behind. When the body was recovered life was extinct. The skull was split in two and a part had been devoured
