Great confusion | ensued, and when the jadge ealled upon the guard and prison warder to remove | the wounded man those officials were} nowhere to be found. It was afterwards | discovered that Wilezinski had escaped; but he was re-captured in the town. | Wierzbickilies in a precarious state, | little hope being entertained of his reco-| very. Some years ago a well known pro- | fessional man of this city, took his de-| partare for one ef the Pacjtic States,| accompanied by his family. He se cured a lucrative practice and tor a | number of years prospered, but invest ing rashly lost his all and shortly thereafter died, leaving his family with very little tolive on. When the family left this city they were aceome. panied by aman servant, who, when disaster came upon them, was left to his own resources. He went to work in the mioes and after a few years suc- ceeded in saving a sum of monev which he invested in profitable enterprises,and

to-day ranks among the wealthy men of the Pacific slope. A son of the

family referred to had in the meantime returned to Halifax, and while residing here actedas theagent ofa _ retired merehaot residing abroad. The latter, a short time since withdrew his invest- ments ani disposed of his property in this country, thus doing away with the necessity for an agentand the gentle- man who hed been acting as such was obliged to look elsewhere for employ- went. This he soon procuredin the shape of lucrative position offered him by the man who was formerly the ser- vant of his father. About a week ago he took his departure, and it is to be hoped his lines have fallen in p!easant places.— Halifax Herald. SEE ee

The national debt to-day ameunts to $1,- 498,041,723, so that if the present sur- plus is kept up for another decade, the entire interest bearing debt of the Union will be wiped out. —_— Immigration.—The number of immi- grents arriving at Canadian ports last year was 183,105, against 175,410 in 1882. Of last year's immigration 72,521 were bound for the United States, against 96,723 in 1882, leaving the net immigration into Canada Jast vear 115,284 against 99,218 the year before. .
