HOUSE OF COMMONS. The Edgar - Caron Charges,

The whole afternoen sitting was apent ia committee upon the Government's bill to amend the criminal code. The bill passed.

After recess Mr. Edgar brought up his charges against Sir Adolphe Caron. He said that in refusing to sppear before the Commission he was backed up by the inde- pendent press. In reading over the evid- ence he had uo fault to find with the ruling vf the Commissioners, but he could not say anything in favor of the conduct of the counsel fev the crown. He had not sheltered himself behind his parliamentary privileges, but had openly published his charge in several newspapers and had on the public platform repeaied them before the face of McKenzie buwell and challeng- ed him to bring the epeaker before any court. Mr. Bowell did not accept the challenge. Mr. Edgar then proceeded to discuss the evidence taken by the commission, dealing particularly with those portions which he considered bore heaviest against Sir Adolphe Caron. Mr. Edgar, who is the possessor of a voice that sounds as if he were talking through a telephone, is not the style of speaker te arouse enthus- iasm, and when 9 30 o'clock came he was talking to about 150 empty seats. In closing his speech, Mr. Edgar moved the following amendment :

** That in the opinion of this House, the evidence taken by the Royal commission, establishes facts which should have pre- vented the reappvintment of Sir Adolphe Caron as an advieer of the Crown, and renders it highly improper that he should continue in that position.”

Hon. Mr. Curran made an effective reply to Mr. Edgar's speech. He treated the evidence taken by the Commission in an exhaustive manner, and read extract after extract to show the falsity of the two seta of charges against Sir Adolphe—those laid before the Commission and those preferred by Mr. Eigar, who cow- ardly refused to appear when summoned as a witness.

Mr. Davies moved the adjournment of the debate at 11.59. The vote will probably be reached to-day.

The Connolly-MecUreevy trial has been ad- journed till September, owing to the absence of Robert McGreevy, who skipped from the traia on which he journeyed from Quebec to the capital. A Bench warrant has been issucd for his arrest.

The Prohibition Commission. Moyrreat, March 23,

Mr. P. Monaghan, secretary of the Prohib- ition Commission, is now in Montreal arrang- ing and compiling the evidence taken by the commissioners of the liquor traffic in Quebec and the Maritime Provinces. The commiesion will postpone ita sessions until after the pro- rogstion of the Outario Legislature

Prince of Wales’ Cup—Stolen.

St. Joux, March 23. Some bedy has stolen the Prince of Wales’ oup from the residence of M, (i. B. Hender- son, who has held it as winner for the St. John Fusiliers. There was a fire at Mr. Henderson's house and the cup has not been seen since.
