**My tandem?’ cried the girl. ‘‘Why, it isn't my tandem."’

**Not your tancdiem?’’ shouted Baxter. **W hose is it, then?’’

““Why,’’ said the girl, “I thought it was yours.”’

‘*Heavens, no!’’ groaned Baxter.

“But you acted as if it was yours,” zaid the girl.

‘*What shall girl.

**Take it back,'’ said Baxter.

So they rode back in silence, and when they were about a block away the girl said:

“*I guess I’ll stop here.”

Henry Ward Beecher was once ap proached by a young man who oonsid- ered himself very clever.

‘Do you know, Mr. Beecher,” said he, ‘‘I’ve been thinking that I would settle down, behave myself and join your church. Now, I like your preach. ing, but when I go to your church and seo such men as old §S. and othurs, grasping skinflints and hypocrites to the core, sitting there in full member- ship, why, the thing is just a little too much for me, and really,’’ he added, **T cannot join.’’

‘‘Well, you're right,” said Mr Beecher. ‘‘Every church has such men, and I fancy Plymouth is not free from them, and until] you spoke I have always wondered why the good Lord permitted it. Now I understand.’’

‘*Ab,’’ gurgled the young fellow, ‘1 am glad I have thrown light on the question! What strikes you as the rea- son, Mr. Beecher?’’

‘*Well,’’ replied the great preacher, ‘it is permitted in order to keep just such fools as you out of the churches.”

Waterloo—were gained by English generals, and won, for the most part, by Euglish soldiers. Even at Fontenoy, the greatest victory of which France can boast since Hastings, every regiment in the French army was on their own admission routed by the terrible English column, and victory was snatched from its grasp solely from want of support on the part of the Dutch and Austrians.—Alison’s ‘‘Life of Marlborough.’’

TWO HUMOROUS BROTHERS.

They Won Wagers on the Strength of Their Own Homeliness,

Many years ago there were two broth- ers, named Joe] and Jonathan, who were famous throughout Wayne county, Ind., because they were both such frights. One day they were on their way to Cincinnati by wagon in the days of the old canal. The wagon was of the covered variety, and only Joel was visible to the natural eye as the vehicle plunged into and out of the chuck holes that infested the way. Joel was said to be the next to the ugliest man iu all the country round, and his brother took precedence.

The two brothers met astranger, who, attracted by the supremely homely face of Joel, stopped his horse and said:

‘*Excuse me, my friend, but would you mind tellin me your name?’’

In a sepulchral tone that fitted well the hideous face Joel replied:

‘*Well, 1 guess 1 hain’t never done nothin that would make me ashamed to tell my name. My name is Joel’’—

‘‘Where do you live, if itis a fai: question?’’

‘IT live in Wayne county, Indianny.”’

‘*Well, stranger, I've seen much of Indianny, but I'll bet you $10 that you're the ugliest man in the state.”’

‘Well, I hain’t no gamblin man," replied Joel, ‘‘but I hain’t never seen nothin in the Scriptur’ ag’in bettin ona sure thing, an I'}) jest take that bet.’’

Turning to the wagon cover and peer- ing into its depths he called:

‘‘ Jonathan, stick your head out hyer.”’

Jonathan did as he was requested.
