It is a well known fact in Pariisment that he was always opposed to the subway or tunnel. But whilst the eloquent pens of the Arch- bishop of Halifax, Principal Grant, of Queen’s University, Kingston, the editor of the Week, aa well as the whole press of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, were advocating the scheme, where was Mr, Davies? I read his speeches in Halifax, St. ' John, Moncton and other portions of the’ Maritime Previnces, but I looked in vain for one ray of sunshine or one word on be- half of bis native province. He forgot in the gigantic flights of nis puetic fancy his Island home—it was never in his thoughts. He saw the farmer strugg!ing with his crops through the bad weather of the fali—he saw him handicapped as against his neigh- bor of the Mainland, but he was as dumb as an oyster on the subject. To Exp an Insurance Company.—The New York Equitable Insurance Company, of No 58 Wall Street, according to the New York Herald, finds that excessive competition and the present low rate of interest has made the business unprofitable, and has taken pro- ecedings in the Supreme Court for a voluntary dissolution. The company was incorporated nearly fifty years ago by a special charter, and has a capital stock uf $210,000. Its indebted- ness is small. The directors say that com- panies with larger capital can do business with a smaller ratio of expenses.
