v . we turned the pages of the old Autograph Album—-the faded pink and blue and cream. with the re- spect of one who walks the narrow paths of a quiet churchyard where below the low green mounds of summer. sleeps the city of the dead. But. not all of those whose youth- ful offerings were inscribed in our book had gone from earthly scenes. HPN was the handwriting, a little careless, of the merry lass whose vense had matched her nature. A bit light it seemed and yet beneath one could catch the deeper senti- ment. We chuckled rioting how much the ensuing years had fruited her lines for us.

She was one who avowedly was "never, never. going to find myself tied to any man. What. wash and mend and clean and cook and." with uptilted nose. "take care of children Not 1! There's better in life than drudgery like that. That's as far as my mother and grand-

Back- ache is also recognized as a feat- iire in diseases of women, organic nervous diseases and states of anx- iety and hysteria. Much less ap- preciated is the fact that backache may be caused by various disturb- ances of the stomach and intestines tintra-abdominal disordenai. As far back as 1829, a noted physician. Cruveilher, observed th at m an y patients complain more of a ten- derness or a painful spot in ane spine than of these symptoms in the stomach region."

Other cases have been seen in which backache occurred with stom- ach dismmfort and pain. The back pain was as troublesome as the indigestion and sometinics worse. By paying close or more attention to the stomach ulcer. giving it. regular ulcer treatment relief was obtained for both the stomach and the back symptoms.

As stomach symptoms may be overlooked as a cause of backache. Dr Boattie states that the ini- portance of the symptom of back- ache in stomach and intestinal diseases and the mechanism 73 which these symptoms are caused should receive more attention for Ortllflpt-dlc. arthritis. and other specialists who spend their efforts in trying to locate the specific or special cause of the backache in which the underlying cause is in- digestion in many cases

As we think over these cases of indigestion. we should try to keep in mind the well-known fact that. as stated by Chesterton. a sleeplrsr night, an attack of indigestion, and A rainy morning can make a cow- ard otit of a man who might other- wise havn been a hero. Certainly. an attack of indigestion can cause Iymptoms such as backache in many individuals. The point is that un- fortunately few of its think of back- ache as being caused by dyspepsia.

In the teaching of Jesus there are to be found side by side ny- inga which exalt peace and others which assume the necemlty of strenuous conflict. The some Jesus who said “Blessed are the peace- makers" also said. "I came not to send peace. but a sword."

It is significant that the Gospels portray Our Lord as coming ineo collision with the dark powers of evil almost at the beginning of his ministry. in the form of men be- lieved to be devil-possessed It will be recalled how one such demoniac was healed, and how the amaze- ni:.;t which the exorcism produced led to an important statement by our Lord about the powers of evil. Being accused of “casting out Satan, he replies that this is impossible. “If Satan cast out Satan how shall his kingdom stand?" The realm of darkness is a closely knit kingdom in which a oombination of forces results in the hinderintl of God's purpose and in the maimlns Of human life. When Christ announc- ed that God's kingdom had come he announced at the same time that an assault had’ been made on the kingdom of evil. “If I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God 1! con-lg upon you" He is “the strong man armed." who first binds Sa- tan and then “spoils hi-I 800d-5-" that is releases those who are un- der his dominion.
