Results Of Atlas Dy

On June 21, 4 crews of birders tested their footwear, eyes and ears at Howe Pt., Valleyfield, Seacow Head and Burton while participating in the North American Breeding Bird Atlas Day. The task was to find evidence of breeding by birds, record the same and have a good time while doing so. Evidence of breeding birds was not so easily obtained, but everyone en— joyed the outings and learned a bit about the Atlas project in the process. Briefly, here are the results:

Howe Pt. Seacow Head Burton Valleyfield

The confirmed species at Howe Pt. were black guillemot, bank swallow, barn swallow and belted kingfisher; at Seacow Pond - black guillemot, am. robin, bank swallow, savannah sparrow and song sparrow; at Burton — am. crow, barn swallow and song sparrow; and at Valleyfield - dOWny wood— pecker, northern flicker, ovenbird and am. redstart.

"Observed" birds are those not found in suitable nesting habitat, for example, a flicker seen on the shore at Seacow Head. It should also be noted that nests in Valleyfield were scouted in advance of Atlas Day and are included in the Atlas Day totals. Thanks to Terry Power for those treats.

Other sightings of interest were guillemot nests at Seacow Head and Howe Pt., common loons at Seacow Head, a mourning dove at Burton, and a cooperative barred owl in the Valleyfield demonstration woodlot. The owl sat quietly while being viewed from 15 ft. by 3 amazed humans.
