First, it will give greater harbor space to the city (and this 18 a very imporiant consid- eration); the second and mcst material is that the depth of water in the channel and the quantity of mud therein is greater at Cumberland etreet nan at Kensington, and that the foundations of the Lridge in the channel would not be so eecure at Cumberland street as at Kensington, Then again it is admitted that the railway depot requires more space than it bas «t resent; more so when the Belfast and Murrey Harbor Kailway is structed. If extended to Kessington it will net cost much to acquire the neces- sary ground, and there will be plenty of space for the future. I notice that seme are in favor of filling up the water space inside of the Railway Bridge to the ehore, which, they allege, would afford eufficien space for the proposed railway extension. Now, to fill upthis space would costa large sum of money,—probably $259,000 or more. I euppose the proposed exten sion to Kensington would pot cost over $100,000 at the outside, including the land which is not of great value ‘as farming land or for building site*,’as the city is not extending in tbat direction.
I admit, freely, that from a local point of view it wou'd be more convenient for citizens to have the bridge at Camberiand Street, “‘or better stil at the present Ferry Wharf” where the ground belongs tothe public. But the Dominiou Gov. ernment looks at it as aquestion of the extension of the Island Railway syetem to
